The global container fleet is experiencing unprecedented growth, with capacity expected to surpass 30 million TEU by the end of the third quarter of 2024. This surge is primarily driven by a remarkable shipbuilding spree, with new vessels entering the market at a faster pace than ever before.
BIMCO reports a staggering 11% increase in fleet capacity to 29.5 million TEU in the first half of 2024 alone, the most rapid expansion in 15 years. This rapid growth is fueled by robust cargo volumes and the rerouting of ships around the Cape of Good Hope, which has limited ship recycling.
While shipowners have capitalized on high demand by placing substantial new orders, concerns are emerging about potential overcapacity. The order book for 2028 is already filled, and an average of 1.5 million TEU is scheduled for delivery annually between 2025 and 2027.
The focus on larger vessels, particularly those in the 12k-17k TEU range, has intensified. This segment now dominates the fleet, accounting for 22% of total capacity. However, the trend towards even larger ships, which prevailed between 2015 and 2021, is now slowing down due to operational limitations in certain ports.
To counterbalance the rapid fleet expansion, increased ship recycling and a potential return to the Suez Canal are expected to play crucial roles in moderating capacity growth. The industry is closely monitoring these factors as it navigates this period of unprecedented change.

The container shipping industry is undoubtedly at a crossroads. While the current expansion offers opportunities for growth and efficiency, it also poses challenges in terms of overcapacity and port congestion. Striking the right balance between supply and demand will be essential for the industry's long-term sustainability.
