Consumers Ready to Spend in 2025
It is always good to start a new year with some positive indicators, and this one will, I’m sure, be welcomed by motor retailers.
According to 毕马威(英国) ’s latest consumer pulse survey, households entered 2025 feeling increasingly financially confident. The survey also revealed that 80% of consumers plan to make big-ticket purchases in the year ahead, 17% of whom plan to buy a new or used car.
The confidence centred on financial security, with 57% of people feeling financially secure, whereas 21% felt insecure. Just 3% said they could not pay essential bills or were incurring debt to do so.
I can only echo Linda Ellett , UK’s Head of Consumer, Retail, and Leisure, in her reading of the findings: “Whether that spend comes to fruition will depend on a range of factors, including the continued reduction in interest rates and whether perception about economic worsening becomes a reality in the form of increased job insecurity.”
One final thought for the dealer community: When it came to saving money this year, the No.1 item referred to by a quarter of the people interviewed was car insurance. Clearly, switching insurers is one option they will consider, but perhaps people will be more conscious of insurance costs when choosing a car in the coming year.
