Commodity Market Update: Good News for Chicken Wing Lovers!
For those searching for some positive news in the commodity markets—aren’t we all?—chicken wing prices took a dive last week, dropping "Like a Rock" (yes, Seger style) to their lowest levels in over a year. Despite this, persistent inflation across many other key foodservice commodities continues to keep the Datum FS Foodservice Commodity Index approximately 18% (think Yoshinobu Yamamoto) higher than the previous year. Interestingly, chicken wings are now pricing below chicken breasts, which could spark a resurgence in bone-in wing promotions.
Consumer Confidence Wavers Amid Economic Shifts
The rebound of a healthier consumer has been a key theme in recent months, but new data is raising concerns. February’s Consumer Confidence Index saw a sharp drop, nearing a four-year low. According to The Conference Board , "sticky inflation" and concerns around trade and tariffs contributed to this decline. And I think its fairy to say that the swift shifts in government policies have led to cautious behavior among both consumers and equity markets. While these policy changes may be necessary, they could be accompanied with economic uncertainty, potentially impacting both consumer behavior and the food supply chain.
