The Consulting Dragon Warrior: Unleashing the Power Within
Definition of a consultant is a person who provides expert advice professionally.
?
According to the Institute of Management Consultants USA, "The value of a consultant [as compared to a Subject-matter expert (SME)] is to be able to correctly diagnose and effectively transform an often ill-defined problem and apply information, resources, and processes to create a workable and usable solution."
?
Sometimes, the word consultant applies specifically to someone or an organization that provides knowledge, advice, or service, whereas the contractor builds something for the client. There is no single qualification to becoming a consultant, other than those laid down in relation to medical, psychological, and engineering personnel who have attained this level-degree in it or professional licenses.
?
As stated, consulting is an unregulated profession, so anyone or any company can style themselves as consultants.
?
And there is the big problem. How do you tell if you have a good or bad consultant? It is a bit like trying to tell the difference between the superhero and the supervillain at the start of the movie. One can save a business from disaster, and the other one's only purpose is to cause disasters! So, what if I assess what a consultant is by reflecting on a hero versus villain movie like Kung Fu Panda! (This is going to be fun or a disaster!)………….
?
Once upon a time in the mystical land of Business Valley, there lived a wise and powerful dragon warrior named Po. Po was not just an ordinary dragon warrior; he was a consultant with unmatched skills in problem-solving and strategic guidance. But like many consultants, Po was often misunderstood and faced challenges in proving his worth to the business world.
?
In Business Valley, the definition of a consultant was like the ancient art of Kung Fu—a person who provided expert advice and possessed the ability to diagnose and transform ill-defined problems into workable solutions. However, the townspeople often confused consultants with contractors who merely built things for clients. They failed to understand the true value of consultants like Po, who brought knowledge, advice, and service to their clients.
?
Po belonged to the prestigious Consulting Temple, where consultants honed their skills and specialized in various areas, just like the different styles of Kung Fu. The Consulting Temple was known for its ancient wisdom and industry best practices, allowing consultants to tap into their inner potential and develop their own unique methodologies and frameworks.
?
To become a successful consultant, Po had to embark on a journey to discover the secrets of his true power. He learned that a consultant's strength lies in their problem-solving abilities, much like a Kung Fu warrior's agility and combat skills. Po excelled at analyzing complex problems, breaking them down into manageable components, and applying his knowledge and resources to create innovative solutions.
?
But being a skilled problem solver wasn't enough. Po also had to communicate his ideas effectively, just as a Kung Fu master conveys their techniques with precision. Through training in communication skills, Po mastered the art of conveying his thoughts clearly and concisely. He could deliver captivating presentations and actively listen to clients to understand their needs and gather relevant information.
?
As Po continued his journey, he realized that adaptability and flexibility were vital in the world of consulting, much like a Kung Fu warrior adapting to different opponents and environments. Po learned to quickly understand new contexts, adjust to different work environments, and thrive in ever-changing situations. This allowed him to bring fresh perspectives and insights to his clients, helping them navigate challenges with ease.
?
But Po's true strength came from building relationships and collaborating with his clients, just as a Kung Fu warrior forms alliances with fellow warriors. He established rapport, influenced stakeholders, and worked seamlessly as part of a team. Po understood that successful consulting was not just about delivering advice; it was about building trust and fostering strong partnerships with clients.
?
Deep knowledge and expertise were also crucial for Po's success. Like a Kung Fu master specializing in a specific style, Po became a domain expert in various industries and functional areas. His specialized knowledge helped him understand his clients' unique challenges, provide tailored insights, and deliver customized solutions that drove tangible results.
?
Po's journey also emphasized the importance of project management skills, much like a Kung Fu warrior's discipline and focus. He learned to manage projects with clear objectives, timelines, and budgets. Through effective planning, organization, and prioritization, Po ensured that his clients' expectations were met, and results were delivered within constraints.
?
The Consulting Temple instilled in Po a continuous learning mindset, encouraging him to stay updated with industry trends, acquire new skills, and seek opportunities for professional development. Just as Kung Fu warriors never stopped training, Po embraced lifelong learning to stay ahead in the rapidly evolving consulting field.

?
But Po's success as a consultant went beyond technical skills. He embodied professionalism, integrity, and acted as a beacon of trust. Clients relied on him for sensitive and high-stakes projects, knowing that he would maintain confidentiality and uphold ethical standards.
?
As Po reached the pinnacle of his consulting journey, he realized that his ultimate power came from empowering his clients. Like a Kung Fu master transferring knowledge and skills to their disciples, Po went beyond delivering solutions. He transferred knowledge, built internal capabilities, and empowered his clients to sustain the changes long after his departure.
?
In Business Valley, the Consulting Temple and its consultants like Po played a vital role in the business world. They offered expertise, strategic guidance, and objective perspectives that organizations couldn't find elsewhere. They helped organizations overcome challenges, embrace innovation, navigate change, and achieve their strategic goals.
?
However, like any hero, Po faced his own challenges. Not all consulting programs succeeded, and obstacles stood in the way. Misalignment with organizational goals, insufficient stakeholder engagement, poor project management, incomplete understanding of the organization's context, lack of ownership and internal capability building, resistance to change, and unforeseen external factors were among the hurdles that Po and his fellow consultants had to overcome.
?
And sometimes, Po encountered another dragon lurking in the shadows—the formidable and treacherous Tai Lung. Tai Lung represented the dark side of consulting, highlighting the potential dangers and negative impacts that consultants could bring if they wielded their powers for selfish gains.
?
Po, the Heroic Consultant Dragon, embodied the qualities that make consultants truly exceptional. Like the Dragon Warrior in the Kung Fu Panda story, Po embarked on a journey of self-discovery and embraced the path of enlightenment in his consulting career. He learned to harness his powers for the greater good of organizations, bringing about positive change and achieving remarkable outcomes.
?
But, amidst the consulting realm, there also existed a menacing figure known as Tai Lung, the Malevolent Consultant Dragon. Tai Lung represented the darker side of consulting, driven by personal ambition, greed, and a disregard for ethical principles. He exploited his consulting skills to manipulate and deceive, causing harm to organizations and their stakeholders.
?
The story of Po and Tai Lung highlights the dichotomy that exists within the consulting profession. Consultants, like dragons, possess incredible powers, but it is their intentions and choices that determine whether they bring about positive transformation or wreak havoc.
?
The Heroic Consultant Dragon, like Po, understands the true purpose of their role. They utilize their problem-solving abilities, communication skills, adaptability, expertise, and integrity to guide organizations towards success. They build strong relationships, provide domain expertise, and employ effective project management techniques. Their continuous learning mindset and professionalism ensure that they always act with integrity and bring value to their clients.
?
On the other hand, the Malevolent Consultant Dragon, represented by Tai Lung, exploits their skills for personal gain. They prioritize their own interests over those of their clients, disregarding ethics and integrity. They may manipulate information, misalign goals, and disregard the long-term impact of their actions. Their short-sightedness and lack of empathy can lead to failure, damaging organizations and eroding trust in the consulting profession.
?
Organizations must be vigilant when engaging consultants, ensuring they choose those who align with the values of the Heroic Consultant Dragon. By carefully assessing consultants' track records, seeking recommendations, and conducting thorough due diligence, organizations can mitigate the risks associated with the Malevolent Consultant and safeguard their interests.
?
In the enchanting realm of consulting, the tale of Po and Tai Lung serves as a reminder of the tremendous power and responsibility that consultants wield. As organizations seek guidance and expertise, it is crucial to embrace the principles of the Heroic Consultant Dragon and select consultants who bring positive transformation, uphold ethical standards, and ultimately contribute to the success of organizations. By doing so, consultants can unleash their true potential, empower organizations, and uphold the noble standards of the consulting profession.
