What is the most important asset for a SaaS company ? "Software Product"

What is the most important asset for manufacturing company ? "Finished Goods"

What is the most important asset for a consulting business ? "YOU" (Yeah, you, literally!??)

See, consulting is the business of brains. Consulting companies lend their brain-power, as in, their consultants, to organizations facing extremely difficult challenges! As such, they invest a considerable amount for the continuous development and learning of their employees.

But, pradyum, isn't that what almost every company does these days ? Provide learnings resources, courses and whatnot.

Yeah, but, there is almost no incentive to up-skill at the said companies! The onus is on you, and 9 times out of 10, it gets de-prioritised.

What about consulting companies ? They lose business if YOU don't upskill.

For example, In a SaaS company, you can say that, "Ohh I only know android app dev and can't work on iOS dev" and you'll be fine. (For the time being)

That doesnt work in a consulting company when you are in front of a client :) So they push you to learn the domain-relevant knowledge and in many cases tie lucrative incentives for them too.

Now, why is this useful, especially for early/mid-career professionals ?

In most cases, early years at a corporate are spent within the weeds. You are executing projects at a breakneck speed with little thought of what do YOU gain from it. Going down this path till late 20s is a risky endeavor as it ties you to one company too much.

Opposingly, 20s in technology consulting is spent absorbing knowledge like a sponge, solving multiple, hard tech-oriented business problems. In that process, you can choose which technology wave you wanna ride and then dive deeper. This "CHOICE" is what will enable you to actually enjoy what you do in the later years.
