A few days ago I went to Park Street Mews for an exhibition on Geoffrey Bawa’s work. The event itself captured Bawa’s excellence about as good as any medium could: it gives you a general idea but doesn’t come close to approximating his intellectual prowess. But nevertheless the experience was an absolute treat.
There’s a lot I’d like to share about this but I don’t wanna spoil the experience for any of you so I’ll keep it brief.
Over120 documents from the Bawa archives, most of which have never seen the light of day were put on display. Some of which are Bawa’s own quick sketches, and also a collection of interesting quotes
The exhibition consisted of six sections/topics; The introduction, ‘situating a practice’ , ’searching for a way to build’ , ‘colleagues, clients and friends’ , ‘defining new directions’ and my personal favorite ‘places unbuilt’ which was the cherry on top
The exhibits and archives really paint (or sketch??) a picture of how delightfully eccentric Bawa’s thinking was; the intricacies, the complexities, the sophistication all of which click together perfectly like pieces of a puzzle.
