The Construction Industry - Come on In!

The Construction Industry - Come on In!

I had every intention of writing a piece for International Women's Day tomorrow, but attending the CE Annual Conference today in Bristol I'm more moved by the simple theme that I had some great conversations today with some really warm and decent people. The panel spoke well, the questions were good, but what strikes me most when attending such events is the chance remark that comes out when people really talk honestly. We discussed the skills shortage and why more young people aren't immediately attracted to the industry - it's up to all of us to help educate just how flexible and transferable an industry it is, the jobs can suit high flyers to those who enjoy more routine.

Summing up the mornings' proceedings, Kevin Hibbs, Chairing the event reflected on his career starting at Dorset County Council as civil engineer in the 70's and early 80's. He remembered his mentors fondly for nurturing his interest in the construction industry and this took him further in his career - it's always the personal snippets that are most interesting - turns out he sat next to my Dad at DCC for a few years! Apparently they had a very entertaining time - some of the stories would come home to me as a child, no doubt some also wouldn't.

It's people who matter - and this is a great industry to be talking to people and asking for help and guidance. We can all help each other, no matter what stage we are in our career. Well done Abi Scott for organising this - apart from a well attended successful event you reinforced my affection for the construction industry and I'm sure we can all encourage others to consider joining.
