Vice President @ CRH | Advancing innovation & solutions in global construction
The construction industry, a multi-trillion-dollar market and critical engine for global economic growth, faces immense challenges in productivity, efficiency, and sustainability. As a leading contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, the industry is under mounting pressure to innovate and decarbonize. Artificial intelligence (AI) presents a transformative opportunity to address these challenges, but its adoption requires strategic planning to mitigate industry-specific hurdles.
Importantly, AI is not merely a symbolic gesture towards innovation and sustainability. When leveraged effectively, it becomes a powerful strategic tool that can create substantial competitive advantage. Forward-thinking firms are using AI to drive meaningful innovation and achieve tangible decarbonization results, setting themselves apart in an increasingly competitive market.
As part of my ongoing research, I've conducted in-depth interviews with industry executives globally, uncovering fascinating insights into how AI is reshaping this critical sector. Following is a synthesis of these preliminary findings exploring the disruptive potential of AI as a dynamic capability, examining the organizational ambidexterity required for its implementation, and analyzing the strategic decision-making employed by industry leaders to navigate this paradigm shift. As the early findings suggest, those firms that successfully cultivate specialized AI capabilities stand to create barriers to entry, deter competitors, solidify market power, and achieve sustainable competitive advantages in this rapidly evolving landscape.
The AI Revolution in Construction
The construction industry is facing a technological transformation, with AI playing a central role. This emerging technology is reshaping how projects are conceived, designed, and executed - from enhancing productivity and safety to driving sustainability and innovation.
In 2024, the AI market in construction is estimated to reach $4 billion and is projected to grow to $12 billion by 2029, underscoring the industry's recognition of AI's transformative potential. However, despite its potential, AI adoption remains fragmented and faces several industry-specific challenges, including:
Despite these challenges, resistance to change is starting to subside as digital maturity increases and industry challenges warrant greater collaboration. Insights from industry leaders suggest that AI is becoming a competitive necessity, with those lacking AI capabilities finding themselves at a disadvantage.
Unleashing Innovation with AI
AI is proving to be a powerful catalyst for innovation in construction, enabling better ideation, new products and processes, and enhanced customer solutions. Insights from industry leaders highlighted several areas of value creation, namely:
AI and Decarbonization
With the construction industry responsible for 25% of global GHG emissions, AI will play a critical role in decarbonization. While challenges persist in implementation and impact measurement, early application of AI shows promise in:
While research reveals increased engagement with AI for sustainability purposes, it also highlights difficulties in validating its impact on decarbonization at scale. Early pilots have demonstrated potential, but further data is needed to support increased adoption and investment.

Navigating AI Adoption
Successfully integrating AI requires a holistic approach that considers broader structural factors beyond technology, such as governance, business value, and organizational change. Some key strategies managers in firms should consider include:
Organizations are creating dedicated teams and communities around innovation, bringing together motivated individuals to explore emerging technologies, derisk their introduction to the business, and find opportunities to test and scale.
Looking Ahead
The construction industry stands at a critical juncture. Incumbent firms that successfully cultivate specialized AI capabilities can create barriers to entry, deter competitors, solidify market power, and achieve sustainable competitive advantages.
As the pace of change accelerates in the construction industry, it's clear that AI will play a pivotal role in shaping its future. By embracing this emergent technology, creating clear roadmaps, and identifying high-impact use cases, firms can navigate the uncertainty and perceived risk of AI adoption to drive innovation and accelerate decarbonization.
I'd love to hear your thoughts and experiences with AI in the construction industry. How is your organization navigating the AI revolution? Feel free to share your insights in the comments below or reach out to me directly if you'd like to contribute to the ongoing research.
