CONSTANT SPORTS WEEK IN REVIEW
Recent Interview: John Torres W.P. Carey School of Business Alumni
“If you want to get into sports, Arizona is a great place to be in. All the professional franchises and events such as the Super Bowl and the Final Four have allowed me to excel early in my career."
The Constant Sports Podcast was joined by recent W.P. Carey Graduate and sports business specialist Johnny Torres for this week's episode. John talked in depth about his time at W.P. Carey, his leadership position with the Sports Business Association, and all the experience he's been able to attain in the industry thus far in his career.
John currently works in multiple roles, one of which is a marketing coordinator at HEIR a platform that is designed to help bring the fan closer to the athlete. He originally started as a brand ambassador during his time in college, but was quickly promoted and now focuses on finding long-lasting partnerships for the app. John explained that he got started with Heir through the connection he has with his mentor Brain Davison, who is the VP of Partnerships at Heir as well as the founder of Sports Business Ventures - another platform that was discussed.
Sports Business Ventures is a dynamic platform that propels the aspirations of young professionals and college students in the sports industry. It allows individuals looking to break into the industry to gain access from those in executive-level positions. John assists as a contributor for SBV and provides the rest of the team with information related to the industry. Along with SBV and Heir, John also works as a Game Crew member for the Phoenix Mercury , where he assists in all aspects of game presentation whenever there is a home game.
During his time in college, John became the President of the Sports Business Association at ASU, one of the largest clubs on campus that gives students the tools and resources needed to break into the sports industry. Through his connections, he had the opportunity to intern with the Arizona Cardinals Football Club , Arizona Coyotes , and the Super Bowl during his undergraduate studies, and he continues to gain experience now that he's out of school. John starts a full-time role with the Fiesta Bowl in September and is looking forward to gaining more industry experience.

EMERGING TOPICS IN THE SPORTS INDUSTRY
In-game mic for All-Star game
The 93rd annual Midsummer Classic took place earlier this week in Seattle, with the National League defeating the American League by a score of 3-2. While the game itself was exciting enough, Fox and the Major League Baseball (MLB) took it to the next level this year by having more microphones than usual, giving viewers unparalleled access to the players. Viewers could hear multiple conversations between players throughout the broadcast, and many different All-Stars were mic'd up throughout the duration of the game. This included the broadcasters talking to players such as Juan Soto and Mookie Betts while they were in the outfield during play. The best mic 'd-up interaction was when pitcher Nathan Eovaldi was wearing the microphone, and viewers got to hear his thoughts on his pitch sequence which resulted in a strikeout. We've seen a trend of sports and events trying to connect with fans more than ever, and the MLB All-Star game did a terrific job of making this happen.
Summer League Opening Weekend Receives Record Viewership
While Victor Wembanyama's performance in his first NBA action may have been disappointing, the viewership around the world certainly was not. The opening weekend of NBA2K24 Summer League was the most-watched ever across ESPN networks. The network averaged 456,000 viewers across 12 games over the weekend, with Wembanyama's first game averaging 1.38 million viewers. Across social channels, the National Basketball Association (NBA) received over 300 million video views with the combination of the Summer League and the announcement of the in-season tournament. Summer League continues to see an increase in talent, and it has resulted in an extremely positive trend in total viewership.
Wimbledon Uses Creative Partnerships to Attract Younger Audiences
With Wimbledon taking place in the month of July, the popular tennis tournament attempted to connect with a younger demographic and get them interested in the game of tennis. The best way to do this? Fortnite. Wimbledon launched a new mode "Race to Wimbledon" on the popular video game among youth, hoping the new game would result in a younger demographic tuning into the tournament. In this mode, players "run, drive, parkour and fly past London landmarks, including Big Ben and the London Eye, through Wimbledon village and past Andy Murray’s golden letterbox, navigating around larger-than-life obstacles such as giant strawberries and tennis rackets, to make it to Wimbledon’s Centre Court in the fastest time." This innovative partnership shows how brands can interact with their target audience, and it wouldn't be surprising to see similar partnerships in the near future.?
