Consolidating and Sharing the Learning from Coaching

When providing coaching to a group of individuals, whether in a family, a business, or other organization, I have found that some are quicker to engage in and benefit from the process than others. This raises two key questions:

1) How do you help those who have benefited to consolidate their learning and apply it to new situations.

2) How do you persuade those who have been slower to engage that they will benefit from the coaching.

One way to accomplish both goals is to solicit and share (in writing, on video, or in person) testimonials or case studies from those who have benefitted. Here is a sequence of questions you can ask those who have been coached:

  • Describe a situation you faced where you were unsure of how best to handle it, or you had tried to handle it before, and you were not satisfied with the outcome.?
  • What about the situation was troubling to you??
  • How did the coaching process enable you to take a closer look at the situation and your desired outcomes??
  • What new options did you consider??
  • What did you decide to do differently as a result??
  • How did it work out??
  • How did you feel about the outcome??
  • What did you learn from that??
  • How can you make use of the learning in the future??
  • Have you had an opportunity to apply what you learned in a new situation??
  • If so, please describe the situation.
  • ?What did you do differently, based on what you learned?
  • ?How did it work out?

If you find this outline helpful, or you have other ideas about how to share the learning from coaching or get others to engage, please share your experience.
