Consolidate without Compromise
Welcome to the December edition of Streamlined by D3 Security. As we approach the end of the year, we want to discuss a developing trend in the security industry: consolidation.
Vendors are consolidating their offerings to provide end-to-end solutions and incentivizing customers to purchase more of their tools. This has its pros and cons, with the greatest advantage being better interoperability among tools from the same vendor. That may sound alluring to security teams, but this often means they will have to let go of a best-in-class approach for their security tech stack.
Vendor Lock-in
As bigger organizations acquire smaller players in the cybersecurity industry to expand their offerings, they are more likely to develop and maintain better integrations among their own toolsets.
Customers are incentivized to purchase a suite of security products from one vendor as they offer preferred pricing and promise of delivering better communication between tools.
However, this makes customers dependent on a single company for their mission-critical security operations, and leaves them financially vulnerable to that company’s choices because it will be prohibitively difficult to replace the entire suite of tools.
Never put all your eggs in one basket
A smart approach to consolidation
Vendor lock-in opens you up to bigger threats as now most of your security environment depends on the reliability of just one vendor. Even a minor issue with your vendor can set you back days or weeks in your fight against threat actors.
An alternative approach to consolidation would be to deploy a solution that reliably integrates with any security tool you may use and has vendor-specific workflows to save you time and financial resources.
More importantly, this gives you the freedom to switch and upgrade to better tools as they become available; you’re never tied down to one vendor.
