Consistently showing up online in my marketing shouldn't be hard, should it?

'I've been building my business for several years now, so consistently showing up online in my marketing shouldn't be hard, should it? And yet, here I am, feeling stupid and like I don't have a freaking clue what I'm doing because I'm not getting enough clients.'

Actual conversation I had with a client the other day. And a version of the one I've had with many clients and business owners, including myself at times.

It's so easy to think that because you've been in business for a few years, you should have everything figured out. Right?

Nah. Totally 100% been where you are right now, more than a few times in my businesses. Beating yourself up with unrealistic expectations doesn't do you a bit of good.

Yes, you want (and expected) yourself to get there faster. But here's the thing...

In those first few years of business, you're trying to figure it all out.

In many cases, you've gone from being an employee with someone else telling you the next step, to you having to figure out...EVERYTHING. And while it would be wonderful if starting a business came with a starter's manual - it doesn't.

So, you've been trying to get clients , putting in all hours of the day (and sometimes night), learning how to run a business, convince people why they need you over someone more established, get clients, figure out online marketing, and make enough money to pay your bills.

Did I mention getting clients?

It's A LOT to learn and take on/in. So, let yourself off the hook and drop the guilt, shame, and frustration of not being where you think you should be. And instead, embrace and celebrate you being right where you are NOW.

You're still in business, working for yourself, and haven't gone back to being an employee. PLUS, you're entering a new stage in your business.

The one where you've realized you CAN do this. People not only will pay you to help them solve their problems - they ARE paying you.

You've got clients. They just aren't as steady as you would like. Which is why you KNOW it's time to embrace structure and strategy in your marketing, so that you'll have consistent:

• Income that not only pays the bills but gives you the freedom to do the things you planned to do when becoming a business owner
• Clients, so that you aren't stressed and worrying if you are going to pay next month's bills or if something breaks, you might have to go back to being an employee.
• Confidence that your marketing efforts are yielding results - no more winging it - even if you don't see them.
• Hours - working no more than five to six hours a day in your business - so that you have more time for the other aspects of your life.

You KNOW you're right on the edge of everything coming together, BUT you're still lacking the magic formula that pushes you over the hump into easier times.

And you're feeling a bit frustrated because you're seeing others who started at the time or after you did, already hitting their goals. Which is leaving you feeling stupid because you feel like you should have your shit together, like they do, at this point in your business.

So, what do you need to do to get it? What's the next step? The one that is going to deliver a steady stream of clients, while allowing you to reduce stress and worry?

The Next Step

You need an uncomplicated marketing strategy and practices that WORKS FOR YOU.

One that you can commit to, and fits you, your personality, lifestyle, schedule, and business , so that you can show up online consistently EVEN when life or client work gets in the way. NOT some cookie-cutter strategy that worked for someone else in their business. One that works for YOU.

Whether you create it yourself or get help doing it, this is absolutely the next step to achieving the goal you're seeking. Followed by learning what consistent marketing looks like and the structure that goes along with it, so that you have realistic expectations for yourself.

Then:

• Let go of the shoulds and should nots - the expectations of what you're supposed to do or have done.
• Stop comparing yourself to others - you don't know their story for how they got there faster than you did. And even if you do, your pace is obviously different than theirs.
• Switch from a client first business model to making your marketing a priority. Nope, you do not drop everything to take care of a client. Instead, the client is worked into the process so that you can deliver a damn good customer service that takes care of you both.

Finally, GET HELP.

This last one is so freaking important. If you want to make showing up consistently in your online marketing, you gotta get help.

That help can be paid or free. And come in the form of coaching, mentoring, accountability, or support in whatever way you need to help you make your goals and dreams happen .

Personally, I use a mixture of paid and free support. I have a mentor, the support of several close business friends, and my hubby who help keep me accountable and tell me when I'm lost in the weeds. I'm also part of a paid group business coaching/mastermind program.

Getting help and support is necessary for success. Look at any successful business owner you know, and you'll find people in the background that they have supporting them, helping them make it happen.
