Consistent quality - “it’s just the way we do things round here”.

Consistent quality - “it’s just the way we do things round here”.

I talk a LOT about the need for effective systems in your business. About the benefit of developing them and improving them in collaboration with the people who are going to work with them - and about how McDonald’s have used systems to become one of the most consistent and reliable brands on the planet.

Over my many years with McDonald’s, I had a golden opportunity to see first hand how simple, logical and repeatable systems made life easier across all areas of the business. So it may surprise you to learn that at Macs no one ever really talked about ‘systems’.

They were so entrenched, so part of the daily routine that what we would call systems and processes were ‘just the way we do things round here’.

Everyone who works in McDonald’s knows what they’re supposed to do, the standard expected, what ‘good’ looks like. They can get on with their job without micro-management, taking ownership for their role, and full satisfaction in what they achieve.

As Gerber says in the E Myth - “The systems run the business and the people run the systems”.

That independent team who virtually run the business, can only be built on the back of values-based hiring, effective training and development, and a culture where constructive feedback is the day to day norm.

That independent team needs a leader who understands:

  • that having one right way to do everything is key to great customer service and profit
  • that an involved and engaged team will always deliver
  • that every member of the team needs to be trained and given feedback on their performance before they are able to take ownership for it
  • that systems need to evolve and improve.

Every business owner that I know wants their team to perform well, to do what they’re supposed to do, and to the right standard.

But do your team really know what you want them to do?

Do they really know the standards you expect?

Do they know what ‘good’ looks like?

Is consistent quality ‘just the way we do things round here’ in your business?

Do one thing: Take time to step back from your business and review your team; how close are they to working to your standard whether you’re in the business or not?

NB Team assessment is key to your Team Building System and is step 3 of a 9 step roadmap that we lead our clients along, to build the business-critical systems that will make your business scale-ready, and free you from the day to day of your operation.
