Is Consistency The Key?

Growing up, proverbs like ‘Practice makes a man perfect’ and ‘There’s no shortcut to success’ have been mostly used phrases that people would live by. However, as days rolled, several philosophers have both advocated and propagated the fact that more than anything else, it’s consistency that matters the most, as it paves the way forward towards success.

Now, debaters might argue that an ace player in a particular field or genre, doesn’t need to be consistent as he has already mastered the art. In that case, what would consistency help in achieving, and how would it come to the aid? A very famous vlogger from Israel once had compared two situations encircling around two writers, among whom, one was an impeccable one and the other wasn’t that skillful with regard to writing. The former believed in qualitative writing, where she’d complete a piece only after a thorough session of research, interviews, and by adding views of scholars. As is implied, this’d normally take a lot of time, and she’d pen a marvellous piece once a year.

On the contrary, her counterpart, wasn’t pretty much obsessed with the nitty gritties of a methodical approach to writing, would write a piece everyday, where he’d diligently and pretty much religiously would be penning that piece, and made very sure that he didn’t miss it on a single occasion. At length, the vlogger analysed both the pieces, and said that though the former writer’s piece was pretty much hefty, voluminous and knowledgeable, yet a deeper research would reveal that in her case, there has been very little growth from the past year. This situation was absolutely in contrast to the latter, that had literally started from a much lower position, as compared to his counterpart, and in this one year, most of the changes that were being reflected were in his language, grammar, use of words, and efficacy as a whole.

Additionally, the most remarkable change in the latter was definitely that of his speed, as his habbit of writing daily would take him very less time to complete an article. Calculating it accurately, would come somewhere close to 352-357 articles per year (considering that he had reserved a few days off for himself). Now, all these articles would be competing against one single article after a year.

This boils down to the fact that not only would there be a huge leap in quantity, but in quality, and this further zeroes down to the fact, the latter writer achieved this not only out of sheer practice, but also by being religiously consistent.

Time and again, experts have been saying that no matter what the field (singing, working out, reading, writing), one has to be in touch with the process. This way not only does one feel confident in his own undertaking, yet he gradually masters the art as well.

Now, coming to think of it, the analytical bones have started functioning quite strongly. A plethora of thoughts have been running across, the most prominent one among them being, “Is it consistency then that makes a man perfect?”

*Disclaimer: The use of masculine gender is only going by the proverb, and it holds true for all genders. No discrimination there.
