Consistency is an essential factor in success, whether it be in sport, business or in life. How consistent are you?
Consider how important it is for a top level athlete to train consistently in order to learn, build, improve and hone their skills, their fitness levels and their overall performance leading to competition success. The difference between athletes who at the top of their game, reaching their goals and achieving success and those still striving to get there is often the consistency of their performance. Michael Jordan never missed a training or an opportunity to improve his game, he strived to be Mr Consistent every single time he set foot on the court. It is a well recognised fact that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to achieve mastery, whether it be in sport, music or any skill building exercise, so how do you rate?
The same can be said for consistency in business. Imagine if the boss didn’t continuously role model a good work ethic, forgot to turn up to meetings or promised things but never delivered.
- Consistent measures of effective and ineffective performance in the workplace ensures businesses evolve and improve outcomes
- Consistency establishes your reputation and a successful track record is essential. Campaigns can fail before they get to the finish line, not because the tactic was flawed or goals weren't clear, but often because the team simply didn't stay the course to achieve the objective
- Leadership consistency serves as a model for how your team will behave. If you treat a meeting as unimportant, don't be surprised when you find they are doing the same to fellow teammates or even customers
- Maintaining relevancy, a consistent message and a predictable flow of information and communication is essential. Whether you are blogging, using paid advertising or social media, you must be consistent and relevant
As in business, in our every-day lives perception is everything. If your words and actions are all over the place, how do you think that will affect a person’s perception of you? It can signal that you are not trustworthy, and who wants to pursue any kind of relationship with a person of that nature? Relationships are built on trust, the foundation of which is consistency. If you can’t count on someone to always be there for you because their behaviors are inconsistent, you learn that you cannot always trust them. Your values should align with your words, and your words must align with your actions.
Success is not a single act, but rather a daily habit. Whether you want to write a book, get fit, win an Olympic medal, lose weight, run a successful business, or have a loving, stable relationship the key is consistency.
