Have you ever felt so dejected that you could not get out of bed?
Have you ever felt such a huge weight on your heart that it pinned you down and you could not stand up?
There was a moment in my life when I was feeling just that. I could not see a way forward.
You see, I had just broken up with my first love.
To make matters worse, I chose not to share my feelings with anyone. I blame that on my folly as a youth.
What helped me was a focus on something bigger than myself. I thought about where I wanted to be in 5 years’ time.
I knew I wanted to create a legacy for myself and for my future children.
I also wanted to work in an environment that had a mission which resonated with me.

That was when I took up a job in the Public Service. Working in the Public Service was the lifeline I needed at that point.
I loved that the mission was to build a better Singapore for the future and I truly felt that we were all driven by that one mission.
There are different ways to connect to something bigger than yourself.
It can be through the work you do or by helping others through a charity or cause. It can simply be working on a long-term project that will bring joy to others, for example, a family photo album or writing a book.
The key is to find something you like doing enough and to be consistent with it.
We can certainly create passion through our consistency. One of the hardest things I have done is to write a book and there were days when I do not enjoy it at all. But strangely the days when I don’t write, I felt that I was missing something.
Consistency creates passion.

1 年Conversely here's something to think about. Have you felt burnout doing the thing that you truly love? What do you focus on then if you've turned your passion into a business and you feel you're not as motivated as you were before?
