Considerations and care during orthodontic treatment

Dear patient, in order to pass the treatment period more comfortably and without any problems, please read this article carefully and avoid any self-medication.

Orthodontic appliances are devices that cost a lot of money and also require careful and time-consuming placement. In case of breakage, not only the length of treatment will be long, but also special problems such as tooth decay, gum disease and loss of tooth space occurs. Therefore, it is necessary to take care of them and observe oral hygiene

For this purpose, pay attention to the following points:

The first day after installing the brackets on the teeth avoid eating and drinking colored foods such as: tea, soft drinks, sauces, pastes, vegetables, chocolate, gummy candy etc.

In the first days when the orthodontic appliance is placed in your mouth, your teeth may become sensitive or you may have some pain and discomfort. If you feel severe pain on your gum, contact clinic.

Avoid eating sticky foods such as chocolate, chewing gum, candy and the like that during treatment.

Do not eat solid foods such as crunchy rice, dry bread and dried fruit during treatment.

Do not bite on hard foods such as sandwich, apple, carrot and similar fruits.

Do not bite on junk foods such as pistachios, hazelnuts, almonds etc.

Detach before eating the fruits such as: peaches, nectarines, apricots, dates, olives etc.

In emergency cases, such as breaking, bending, opening and detaching a part of the device and wire, contact the clinic immediately.

The force and time of using orthodontic appliances (Face bow, headgear, chin cup) and intraoral clamps are very important in the treatment progress. Please do not increase or decrease its force and observe the time of use exactly.

If orthodontic ring sire prescribed, go to the clinic to receive the orthodontic ring before they run out.

The most important point during orthodontic treatment is regular cleaning of the teeth. The orthodontic appliances cause food retention and if they are not cleaned properly, caries will occur. For this purpose, brush your teeth correctly and completely 6 times a day (after each meal). When you are not at home, be sure to bring your orthodontic toothbrush after your snack. The surfaces of each tooth should be brushed ten times and a proper brushing for both jaws take about 15 minutes. Be sure to clean the brackets and the gums. Germs tend to hide in these areas and rot occurs in these areas.

How many types of orthodontics do we have?

Different types of orthodontics are divided into two main categories: fixed and movable. In fixed orthodontics, the patient cannot remove the orthodontic appliance. But in mobile orthodontics, the patient can remove the orthodontic appliance.

?What is the best age to have fixed orthodontics?

12 to 15 years old is the best age to do orthodontics.

?What is the purpose of orthodontics?

Orthodontics means aligning the teeth. The purpose is to arrange the upper, lower, or both jaws teeth. But also, it leads to beauty. Teeth are a part of the body that, in addition to being healthy, their beauty is very important in a person's appearance and even the way they talk and communicate with others.

How long is the orthodontic treatment period?

Treatment typically takes about one and a half to two years. Of course, this is a limit and the length of treatment may be different for each person.

Does orthodontic treatment require prior preparation of patients?

Proper orthodontic treatment requires special discipline and preparation of patients. This preparation includes scaling, caries treatment, tooth extraction if needed, and health education.

The main condition for successful orthodontic treatment is patient cooperation and following the advice of a specialist. Because orthodontic treatment takes long time and the patient's interest and desire to achieve a good result is effective.

???Does orthodontics increase the life of teeth?

Aligning the teeth puts them in the desired position inside the jaw, which results in a balanced distribution of force in all directions and pressure reduction on the roots of the teeth. On the other hand, regular teeth will help to clean them.

A regular toothbrush cannot clean the areas between the teeth and under the wires properly, so clean the areas under the wires with an interdental toothbrush. Use this toothbrush at least once a day. Pull the toothbrush bristles to the surface of the teeth and the sides of the bracket.

Flossing is necessary at least once a day. To do this, you can use regular floss with the help of floss thread or superflux floss. These tools only make flossing easier and you can use a regular floss.

In the first week that the brackets are placed on the teeth to prevent wounds, swelling and discomfort, put a little piece of wax on the brackets and smooth the surface and change it every 24 hours. This wax makes you comfortable by creating a smooth surface. Keep the extra wax for use in emergencies.

The average interval between orthodontic visits is 3 to 4 weeks. Increasing and decreasing the distance between visits is allowed only at the doctor's discretion.

In case of prolongation without coordination, the patient is responsible for possible problems.

Absence in visit sessions prolongs treatment and reduces tooth movement. Avoid absence.

There is need to use a retainer after the end of orthodontic treatment. Depending on the problem and the doctor's diagnosis, it can be fixed or movable. The period of use of the retainer is as important as the course of the treatment, and delinquency of use the retainer reduces the treatment result. The reason to use retainers is that with retaining tissues around the teeth, need to maturation to prevent relapse. The duration of retainer use depends on the type of initial problem and the age of the patient. The minimum is one year and the maximum is for lifetime.

The type of treatment and the length of treatment is unique to each person and therefore orthodontic treatment is a specialized treatment. So do not compare yourself with others and if you have any question, ask your dentist.

Removable orthodontic plates considerations

?The result of the treatment is obtained following the correct use of the removable plate and following the expert recommendations, and miracles do not happen without use of orthodontic appliance.

In the first week of using the movable appliance, because the tongue is not yet accustomed, the speech changes a little and some letters become difficult to pronounce. The body usually gets used to the device within a week and the person can speak as easily as before. Speak loudly at home to speed up this process.

After delivering the plaque on the first day, the plaque may cause sores or pain in some areas. Seeing dentist will definitely solve the problem.

Use the plaque according to the doctor's instructions, and absence or delay in visit, will make the treatment ineffective.

Only use the wires on the back to remove the plaque.

Referrals should usually be every 3 weeks or 4 weeks, and delaying referrals or absences may prolong treatment.

Use a toothbrush and detergent (hands or dishes) to clean plaque. Remove plaque from the mouth and carefully clean all surfaces. In children, parent’s careful supervision of plaque hygiene is essential. If the plaque is not cleaned, the accumulation of germs will cause inflammation of the mouth tissue and the appliance will be replaced.

In cases where the appliance has screws and you have to open it according to the instructions (usually twice a week) at home. Do this carefully and write it down on paper. Unscrewing several times in a row will cause the plaque to misalign and loosen. Irregular use of plaque also causes the appliance looseness.

In case of pain, you can use ibuprofen or acetaminophen syrup every 8 hours for children and in adult’s acetaminophen codeine tablets.
