In the hustle and bustle of the business world, stress often lurks in the shadows, quietly gnawing away at the well-being of individuals and the health of businesses. Ignoring stress isn't merely a matter of toughing it out; it's a dangerous gamble with potentially dire consequences. As I delve into this topic, it's crucial to shed light on how stress affects all people, however, men appear to be affected as they will often internalise their struggles rather than seek support and explore what can be done to combat this silent killer.
?
The Impact of Ignoring Stress
?
Stress isn't just an inconvenience; it's a significant risk for various health issues, including heart disease, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes (trust me…) and mental health issues like anxiety and depression. The truth is that stress-related illnesses don't discriminate; they can strike anyone, regardless of age, gender, or position in the corporate hierarchy.
?
However, one demographic that often bears the brunt of stress in silence is men. Societal expectations, ingrained stereotypes, and cultural norms often pressure men to suppress their emotions and soldier on, even when they're struggling internally. This male facade may seem like strength on the surface, but in reality, it's a ticking time bomb that can lead to devastating consequences.
?
Statistics paint a sobering picture of the toll that stress takes on men's health. According to recent studies, men are significantly less likely than women to seek professional help for mental health issues. Suicide rates among men is nearly four times higher than that of women, with stress and untreated mental health conditions playing a significant role in this disparity.
?
Unfortunately, the workplace can be a breeding ground for stress, with factors like excessive workload, long hours, unrealistic expectations, and toxic work environments exacerbating the problem. Left unaddressed, chronic stress not only jeopardises individual well-being but also undermines productivity, employee morale, and ultimately the bottom line of businesses.
?
Combatting Stress: A Call to Action
?
The first step in combating stress is acknowledging its presence and recognising its devastating effects. Business leaders and employees alike must prioritise mental health and create a culture that encourages open dialogue, empathy, and support. Here are some actionable steps that can help reduce the risks of stress in the workplace:
?
1. Promote Work-Life Blend (it doesn’t have to be perfectly balanced): Encourage employees to maintain a healthy balance between work and personal life by setting realistic expectations, respecting boundaries, and offering flexibility when possible.
?
2. Provide Resources and Support: Invest in employee assistance programs, mental health resources, and training for managers to recognise the signs of stress and provide appropriate support and referrals.
?
3. Foster a Positive Work Environment: Cultivate a culture of trust, respect, and appreciation where employees feel valued, heard, and supported in both their professional and personal growth.
?
4. Encourage Open Communication: Break down the barriers and stigma surrounding mental health by promoting open and honest conversations about stress, emotions, and well-being. Create safe spaces for employees to share their experiences without fear of judgment or reprisal.
?
5. Lead by Example: Business leaders should lead by example by prioritising their own mental health, advocating for a work-life blend that works for the individual, and demonstrating vulnerability and empathy in their interactions with employees. Remembering that some people can’t give you a perfect “balance” of 50% all of the time, but they can sometimes give you more… whilst you have to sometimes give them more and accept 30% is good enough.
?
Closing Thoughts
?
In the fast-paced world of business, ignoring stress is not an option. It's a silent killer that can wreak havoc on individuals, teams, and organisations if left unchecked. By tackling stress head-on, fostering a culture of support and understanding, and prioritising mental health, we can create healthier, happier, and more resilient workplaces for everyone.

The most important thing to do is recognise the cause, get to work on that - then you can overlay some great coping mechanisms and good habits into your life to help on the long term.
