The Consequences of Cutting Corners: Don't Let Willy the Landscaper Design Your Presentations

The Consequences of Cutting Corners: Don't Let Willy the Landscaper Design Your Presentations

We have one of those houses that is a landscaping nightmare—something that you don't think about when buying a home but really should. For years, I hired Willy to help make our yard presentable.

And he’s that guy you love immediately—always smiling, extremely kind, and a very hard worker.

During one of our summer cleanups, I mentioned to Willy that we were looking to paint the interior of the house and asked him if he knew anyone he could recommend. He said, "I can do that for you."

I immediately thought I had scored big time. Willy was a friend, he had always done solid work around the yard, and the pricing was right. Why not?

Turns out Willy excels at landscaping, not interior painting. We’re still finding splotches of paint on stairwells and tiles.?

As startups, our mantra is "get it done quickly, and cheaply."?

However, as our business scales, it's important to eliminate those words from our vocabulary and focus on quality and efficiency. It's important to hire the right people for the right job and allow them to focus on their area of expertise so they can contribute to the larger vision and help the company achieve its goals.

So asking your sales team to design presentations is like asking Willy the landscaper to paint the house. They’ll tell you they can, but they didn't go to design school. They don’t know how to develop a well-structured presentation architecture or build visually compelling sales stories. Their expertise is in sales, not designing presentations.

Like all the touch-up work I had to do after Willy painted our house, cutting corners on your presentations comes with many hidden costs to your business such as:

  • Loss in sales
  • Damage to the company's reputation
  • Poor communication of your product offering
  • Decrease in morale

But most importantly, it is a massive time-suck for your sales team. They have more important things to do than look for stale stock imagery and replace your brand fonts with Comic Sans.?

If investing in your team’s success this year is on your to-do list, don’t cut corners and go for the quick fix.?

Invest in the right tools and partners that will give your team a shot at having record-breaking sales this year!?

See for yourself how quickly you can create presentations in seconds when you have the right tools.

And as for Willy, my yard will keep him plenty busy, and that works for both of us.
