Let all things be done in moderation.” – 1 Corinthians 14:40
It’s 3:32 AM, just three days before Christmas?—?the ninth day of this season of reflection. Outside, the world is still, bathed in the soft glow of moonlight, and crickets compose their own quiet carol. The silence wraps around me like a comforting embrace, a gift from the heavens. In this peaceful moment, my thoughts drift, reflecting on the lessons life has offered me?—?lessons shaped by the partridge of hope in my darkest winters, the calling doves of resilience, and the steady drumbeat of growth despite record-setting setbacks. Each moment, though challenging, feels like one of the twelve precious gifts time has etched into my heart?—?lessons from a dysfunctional childhood, chronic trauma, unhealthy self-worth, grief, significant setbacks, and, ultimately, perseverance.
As I sit in stillness, the outdoors whispers a melody of its own, like the subtle notes of a Christmas carol. My mind travels through time, through the layers of who I was, who I am, and who I’m still becoming. The miles I’ve traveled are many, but the path ahead still stretches far.
I see a younger version of myself: passionate, driven, but out of balance. Bursting with visions for the future yet stumbling. My undergraduate years mirrored this imbalance. I began with promise?—?celebrated as a scholar and brimming with optimism for a future full of possibilities. But by my second year, the cracks began to show. I faltered?—?badly. Extra years in school followed, each one feeling like a public indictment of my dreams. Back then, it seemed like the end?—?a permanent, indelible scar on the story I was trying to write.
Now, I see it differently. What I thought was the end was merely the beginning of something far more profound?—?a pivotal awakening.
It wasn’t just academic setbacks I was grappling with. I was burning out on every level?—?emotionally, mentally, spiritually, and in ways I couldn’t fully comprehend. I had been sprinting through life, piling on responsibilities without ever pausing to breathe?—?without ever attending to me. I poured all my energy into excelling in one area, but everything else crumbled around me. The issue wasn’t the vision in my heart; it was the absence of balance.
I lacked moderation. I lacked self-care. I lacked the awareness to see how deeply unresolved childhood trauma, intertwined with complex and deeply ingrained family nuances, had shaped my journey. When I finally paused to reflect?—?after hitting rock bottom more times than I’d like to admit?—?the truth became undeniable. I lacked alignment. I couldn’t prioritize, couldn’t say ‘no’ when it mattered, and dismissed the need for rest as a luxury I couldn’t afford. I had poured everything into others, leaving nothing for myself?—?constantly giving from an empty cup; sleepwalking through life, caught in patterns unworthy of the person I aspired to be, and those unconscious, misguided choices ultimately deepened the hurts and setbacks.
That harsh realization became my turning point.
I learned something essential: You can’t save the world if you’re drowning in your own chaos. So, I made a quality decision: to start with myself, to lead my life consciously with intention, balance, and care, guided by the light of the beautiful story of love by my Savior and Lord, Jesus Christ.
Here’s a truth I’ve come to embrace: moderation isn’t a roadblock to success?—?it’s the path to it. Society often glorifies endless hustle, urging us to pour everything into one area while others suffer. But what’s the point of excelling in one area if everything else crumbles? True success is holistic, aligning with God’s desire for us to be fruitful and productive in every good work (Colossians 1:10, ESV). Life is multidimensional, and thriving begins with being present in every area that truly matters?—?starting with YOU.
What I call ‘conscious accountability’ became my compass. I had to face myself?—?challenging long-held beliefs, unexamined dysfunctions, and buried traumas. Confronting these issues was essential, though far from easy. Think of it this way: if your destination is Lagos but you’re heading toward Abuja, no amount of speed will get you to Lagos. You must stop, reassess, and chart a new course toward Lagos. No excuses. It takes courage, but the rewards? Immeasurable.

Self-awareness, guided by God’s wisdom, increasingly illuminated the path when I felt lost. It helped me set clear boundaries?—?not to limit myself, but to protect what truly mattered. Moderation isn’t about perfection; it’s about consistency. This renewed perspective continues to guide me in rebuilding my life, creating sustainable growth at every level and context.
I’m now taking intentional steps daily to listen more than I speak, to remain open to what holds value, and to embrace flexibility over the rigidity that once defined me. I’m making mindful choices about what I eat, practicing moderation, and nurturing healthy, meaningful relationships built on mutual respect. It starts with the one person I can’t escape?—?myself.
Physical health is a priority, too. I continue to integrate regular activity, mindfulness, and preventive care into my routine. At the same time, I invest in valuable skills and explore hobbies that bring joy and enrichment to my life, my family, and sphere of influence.
One more thing: I’m managing my time with intention, balancing focused work with restorative relaxation, and staying spiritually anchored through Bible study and engagement in a nurturing spiritual community. Financial stewardship has also become a cornerstone of my journey, balancing generosity with prudent saving and investing. With my wife, Nenye’s loving encouragement, I’m carving out time for fun and play, embracing life’s spontaneity.
I’m also committed to making a difference in every community I’m part of?—?both online and offline?—?using my voice and skills to uplift others and champion causes that inspire me to leave the world better than I found it.
As I continue these intentional steps toward balance, I realize that transformation doesn’t happen overnight. It takes consistency, courage, and relentless commitment to myself. Each small change today leads to a bigger impact tomorrow. And I want the same for you.
So, I’ll ask: Where are you overcommitting and under-delivering? What parts of your life are out of alignment, just waiting for your attention? The real key to lasting change begins with prioritizing YOU. Start today. Reassess your priorities. Establish boundaries that protect your peace, health, and purpose.
Don’t run your life like it’s a sprint when it’s a marathon. Take it one step, one day at a time. Practice moderation and build your life on a foundation that supports every dimension of who you are: your spirit, mind, body, and relationships.
The world doesn’t need another overcommitted, burnt-out achiever. It needs people who are truly thriving?—?balanced, intentional, and present in their lives. Start small. Start now. Your future self will thank you.
This is your journey?—?one step at a time, with purpose and intention.
