20th Ramadan marks the day when Prophet conquered Makkah in 8th Hijri. It was the very first time in the history that a conqueror showed immense humility and forgave his enemies who troubled him for more than 20 years.
The same prophet who himself, along with thousands of his companions was forced to leave his city - Makkah, was back to his beloved land triumphant, after the Makkans had breached the peace treaty (by killing 20 non-Muslim people of Banu Khuza'ah who were under Prophet Muhammed's security). Not after long time passed, those who opposed him were lying at his feet.
Despite the power, however, Prophet with his humility, while entering Makkah, bent his sacred head so much that his beard touched the saddle of his camel. (Reference: Ibn Ishaq)
As per Imam Bukhari (who narrated it through Muawiayah bin Qurrah from Abdullah bin Mughaffal), when Prophet entered Makkah, he recited Quranic verses in quavering voice, out of humility.
People thought that Prophet would retribute the Makkans for what they did to him and his sahaba. Someone said: "Today is the day of bloodshed." But when Prophet heard that, he disliked it and got it announced that rather, that day was the day of mercy.
When Prophet entered Makkah, a lot of people, because of his mercy and compassion didn't hesitate to see him. So he asked those pagans: "O men of Quraish! What do you expect me to do to you?" They said, "We hope for the best, after all, you've been gracious brother to us and the son of a gracious brother." Prophet then said: "You may leave, you're free." (Reference: Ibn Sa'ad)
Not much time passed when Hind bint Utba, Hazrat Abu Sufyan's wife approached Prophet to accept Islam. She was the same lady who was very happy at Hamzah's martyrdom at Uhud and had mutilated his body, cut open his body. Prophet underwent a great pain then, due to this act of Hind, as he used to love Hazrat Hamza a lot. Imagine what would any ruler do to such an enemy of his? However Hind had accepted Islam, so Prophet forgave her too.
Prophet Muhammed's noble character is a practical explanation of mercy, compassion, forgiveness, patience and much more; he is unmatchable, he is the most loveable, and he is the most unforgettable.
