A few days ago, I came across this Oprah Winfrey quote: "Say goodbye to your inner critic, and take this pledge to be kinder to yourself and others." It really struck a chord with me because, let's face it, we deal with criticism from both within ourselves and from others daily.
Our inner critic thrives on our fears and insecurities. It magnifies our perceived shortcomings and amplifies our failures. It makes us feel small and inadequate. It discourages us from taking risks. As if that's not even enough, it keeps us stuck and prevents us from realizing our potential. It's that voice that whispers doubts and criticisms because it knows us too well.
External critics, on the other hand, are those who belittle our efforts, dismiss our dreams, and spew negativity in our direction. They act as reinforcements for our inner critic. Their words, like sharpened arrows, pierce our self-belief, fueling the inner critic's relentless assault on our self-worth.
The battle against our inner critic and external critics is indeed a war. It's a relentless struggle to maintain our self-esteem and pursue our aspirations. The inner critic, that insidious voice within, is a formidable opponent. It constantly undermines our confidence and amplifies our insecurities. And when we add external critics to the mix, the battle becomes even more challenging.
It may become all too easy to succumb to self-doubt and let the negative voices drown out our inner voice of encouragement. Sooner or later, we may begin to internalize the voices of the external critics, believing that we are indeed incapable and unworthy.
But we must not surrender to this negativity. We must recognize that the voices of external critics, no matter how harsh or persistent, do not define us and are oftentimes, merely reflections of their insecurities.
And though our inner critic may never fully disappear, we can learn to silence it whenever it rears its ugly head.

How to Silence the Inner Critic
The war against our inner critic and external critics is a lifelong journey, a battle that requires constant vigilance to discern its influence. We must not only learn to silence the inner critic, but we must also learn to surround ourselves with positive individuals and cultivate self-compassion.
Remember, you are not alone. We all struggle with our inner critic and external critics. The ones who win are the ones who choose to believe in a different voice— a voice that knows that within us lies limitless potential.
Today, this week, this year, and every subsequent day, choose to silence the inner critic and let the words of those who amplify the voice of the inner critic pass through you without taking root in your heart.
You've got this. May this be your best year, yet. Cheers to 2024!
