Conquering Personal Branding Anxiety: Your Path to Embracing Progress

??Hi.. Hi.. Indah here! Welcome to my first ever #MOCATalk or Monday Career Talk episode! ??

In the hustle and bustle of our monthly check-ins with the awesome interns at Campaign, there's a topic that I consistently discuss—personal branding on LinkedIn. As our interns, gearing up to graduate after excelling for four to six months in their internships, present their learnings, competencies, and career plans, my role is to delve into their career plans and preparations. This includes guiding them in utilizing LinkedIn as a medium to showcase their portfolios, achievements, and progress.

Hearing about their growth—both technically and personally—brings a smile to our faces as mentors and organizers of the internship program. We want their progress to shine not just within Campaign but far beyond. Now, let's dive into the common concerns faced by our interns. After chatting with hundreds of them, two significant reasons have surfaced:

  • ?? Feeling Like a Small Fish in a Big Pond: They feel that their achievements are not as significant as those of their peers. This doubt impedes them from sharing their progress on LinkedIn. Even opening LinkedIn makes them more anxious because they haven't reached the level their society is at. Some even worry if the progress they're making is worth publishing, thinking it's just a very small step.
  • ??Fear of Coming Off as a Braggart: Another issue is that they fear sharing their achievements and progress may come off as narcissistic or show-offish. Consequently, they believe it's not something people will appreciate.

So, how do we tackle this? Change Your Mindset!

  1. ?Acknowledge Your Personal Journey: Realize that your journey is uniquely yours. No need to compare it with others. Celebrate your growth without playing the unnecessary comparison game. Witness your progress by comparing yourself to the person you were when you began this journey or assumed this position.
  2. ???Your Lessons Might be Someone’s Guide: Share your achievements by narrating the struggles or challenges you faced while working toward your dream. Instead of bragging, consider it as passing on insights to those who might be stepping into the shoes you once filled.
  3. ??????Beyond Skills: Showcase Your Values: It's not just about technical skills. Highlight your character, personal values, and interests. These are challenging to showcase on a CV but can shine on LinkedIn through various posts.

Let's shift the mindset around personal branding and make updating your LinkedIn profile a confident celebration of your progress! Here are some tips:

  1. Authenticity is Key: Be yourself on LinkedIn. Let your personality shine through your posts. Authenticity builds trust and connection.
  2. Highlight Achievements with Stories: Instead of merely listing achievements, share the stories behind them. What challenges did you overcome? What did you learn from each experience?
  3. Create and Share Content: Share articles, write short posts, or even create your own content related to your field. Providing valuable content positions you as an industry thought leader.
  4. Seek Recommendations: Request recommendations from colleagues or mentors who can speak to your skills and work ethic. Genuine recommendations add credibility.
  5. Stay Consistent: Regularly update your profile with new achievements and experiences. Consistency shows your commitment to professional growth.

Happy learning, and looking forward to your LinkedIn updates! Semangat and happy Monday! ?? #MOCATalk #CareerTalk
