Conquering the Comfort Zone: How to Embrace Change in Your Career

Conquering the Comfort Zone: How to Embrace Change in Your Career

Change?can be daunting.?Especially when it comes to our careers. The familiar routine,?the security of the known,?all hold a powerful sway.?But what if that comfort zone is stifling your growth and happiness?

I have fought change through every season of my life. I thrive on building a routine for myself, and sticking to it. So venturing outside of that routine is daunting.

And I am sure many of you can relate.

In my career, I (thought) I loved routine. Knowing that I would have a steady paycheck, benefits, professional development options. If I hadn't taken those first shaky step into the world of entrepreneurship, I never would have known what this life feels like. I am happier now than I have ever been.

Here is what I have learned.

Acknowledge Fear

First,?acknowledge your fear.?It's normal to feel apprehensive about the unknown.?But don't let it paralyze you.?Instead, understand its source.?Are you worried about financial security??Missing your colleagues??Identifying your specific anxieties will help you address them directly.

Visualize your Future

Next,?visualize your ideal future.?What kind of work ignites your passion??What skills do you yearn to develop??Visualizing your future career can be a powerful tool.?By picturing yourself achieving your goals and excelling in your dream role,?you can boost your confidence and motivation.?This mental rehearsal can prime your brain for success, planting the seeds of what you want to achieve and igniting the drive to turn that vision into reality.

Research Your Next Steps

Now,?let's get practical, and let me be very candid. I am an annoyingly practical person. I am not one to just jump into the deep end without child-sized floaties around my arms.

Research the field that interests you.?Network with professionals in that area.?Look for opportunities to gain relevant skills,?perhaps through online courses or volunteer work.?Every step you take,?no matter how small,?builds confidence and reduces the uncertainty of the unknown.

Remember,?change doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing leap.?Consider taking on a side project related to your desired field.?Explore freelancing opportunities or look for internal transfers within your company.?These stepping stones can ease the transition and provide valuable experience.

The Power of Support

The power of support is crucial when pursuing change because it acts as a multi-pronged defense against the inevitable challenges that arise.?Firstly,?a support system provides encouragement and validation.?During moments of self-doubt,having people who believe in your vision can be the difference between pushing forward or giving up.?

Secondly,?support networks offer practical help.?They can connect you with opportunities,?offer guidance,?and even share the workload during the transition.?Most importantly,?a strong support system fosters a sense of belonging and accountability.?Knowing you're not alone in this journey keeps you motivated and ensures you have someone to celebrate your victories with.

Pro Tip

Embrace a growth mindset.?View challenges as opportunities to learn and evolve.?Every misstep is a chance to improve. This positive outlook will equip you with the resilience needed to navigate the inevitable bumps along the road.

Finally,?remember,?growth often lies outside our comfort zone.?Taking that first step,?however small,?is the most crucial one.?Embrace the journey,?celebrate your progress,?and trust that with dedication and perseverance,?you can achieve your career goals.

Let's conquer our fears, step outside of our comfort zones, and embrace change together. One step at a time. One day at a time. And before long we will all be living the lives that we have only dreamt about.

Mary, I think your callout about naming your fear and demystifying it is super powerful. It sort of loses it’s power as soon as you start to examine it.

The practical tips are fantastic, especially the idea of starting small with a side project or internal transfer. Support system piece is key - having people who believe in you can make all the difference.

Change sucks, but it is inevitable. So my advice? Embrace it!! Change your mindset, and open yourself up to letting change change you for the better. Read that about 10x (yes, I did use the word change 3x in that sentence lol).
