Connor Lisi Achieves Life Scout: One more step to Eagle

My fifteen year-old son, Connor Lisi, just achieved Life Scout. While I'm certainly a proud father, I was hoping to ask the LinkedIn Communities (especially leaders) what hiring an Eagle Scout means. I think it's important that my son hears from others the importance of achieving Eagle rank and how it may (or may not) create opportunities in education, employment and life experiences. While he's certainly been a self-starter as a scout, I think it'd do him good to hear from other people besides his mom and dad about the importance of completing this next phase of his Scouting journey--becoming and Eagle.

SO please folks, share your honest opinions about what Eagle Scout means to you.

I'll not leave you my opinion, I'll leave my experience. I'm a graduate of the University of Maryland with a degree in Computer Science. I often tell young men that I "accidentally graduated" in that I acquired exactly 120 credits and had a 2.03 GPA (you needed 120 credits and a 2.0 to get out back then). I had 48 rejection letters. One day a friend set me up with an interview as a NASA contractor. I went to the mans house and he said: "There is nothing here on your transcript that says I should hire you and your resume is sparse. But, you're an Eagle Scout and I'm an Assistant Scoutmaster, so I know what that means and I'll take a chance. Come to my office tomorrow for a second interview and if you pass, you're hired". That was 44 years ago and I haven't looked back since. When I was a hiring manager, Eagle Scouts moved to the "immediate consideration" pile, while others may have been dismissed. Several years ago, I worked in a group that did rapid system prototyping. In the group of about 20 of us, 8 men were Eagle Scouts, and both women were Gold Scouts. The man that put the group together had no idea of our backgrounds...WE didn't even know until 3 months into one of our projects.

It is important if its done right and the Scout is permitted to have the experience of doing the project themselves. I have the misfortune of living inside the DC beltway. I have certainly seen Eagle projects where helicopter parents carried the burden of planning and I wondered what the scout really got from it. This seems especially common where the scout is 13 - 14. Really no one should be thinking about Eagle before 16. Based on what you have written it seems like you are on the right path. At the end of the day the Eagle is a great accomplishment. BUT, we all have to keep working hard and being good people. So it isn't like your life is complete at that instant. I know one Eagle very well who went on to alcoholism and a ruined life. There are several methods of scouting and advancement is only one of them. Advancement is overstressed in some units which drives some boys from scouting that could have gotten more from the program. Like most of scouting, the value and the point if it, is the doing of it. If the scout is permitted to have the experience, they get so much from it. But the badge itself isn't the point. Congratulations to your son on earning Life. YiS -jeff

It is one of the few things you can accomplish before your 18th birthday that will be a meaningful (and recognized) part of your resume for the rest of your life. Congratulation! All the best as you strive to complete the Eagle rank.
