Telecom Insights: AT&T Expands Fiber Footprint
Corning has secured a multi-year agreement with AT&T to supply various optical networking solutions, including the Evolv FlexNAP cable, which features a compact connector ideal for space-constrained deployments. Importantly, these products are manufactured in the U.S., aligning with the "Build America, Buy America" provisions of the Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment (BEAD) program, potentially qualifying for a share of the $42.5 billion in subsidies. AT&T aims to extend its fiber footprint to over 30 million locations by the end of 2025, capitalizing on strong demand and growing broadband revenue. Telecom Regulatory Insights: FCC Probes Telecom Support Practices
The FCC has launched a Notice of Inquiry to assess customer support practices of telecom and broadband providers, particularly regarding subscription cancellations. FCC Chairwoman Jessica Rosenworcel emphasized the need for transparent and accessible customer service, urging companies to simplify cancellation processes. This initiative follows a similar FTC rule mandating easier cancellation mechanisms for recurring charges, which the telecom industry is likely to resist due to potential increased costs. The FCC aims to enhance oversight of broadband providers and promote consumer protection, as it has done with recent regulations like broadband nutrition labels.
