'Connection Request' Mistake Some People Make

Last week on, "Ask J.T. Anything," I was asked how to customize a connection request on LinkedIn. I'm a big believer in customizing every request. Especially, when reaching out to a stranger. In fact, here's a post on LinkedIn where I show you seven different ways you can do it.

You Should Never Ask For This...

A common mistake I see people making is asking for free services in their connection request. Especially, when reaching out to a stranger. [This quick video explains what I mean.] Think of it this way: you would never walk up to a person you've never met at an in-person networking event and immediately ask them to help you, right? Well, the same thing goes for LinkedIn. Connect first. Build a relationship second. And, then maybe - just maybe, it will make sense to ask them for help.

PS - If you liked this advice, I'd be really grateful if you'd follow me here on LinkedIn and share it in your feed. It helps the article get seen by more people in need of this kind of career help. Just click the "Follow" button at the top of the page. Thanks!
