Last week on, "Ask J.T. Anything," I was asked how to customize a connection request on LinkedIn. I'm a big believer in customizing every request. Especially, when reaching out to a stranger. In fact, here's a post on LinkedIn where I show you seven different ways you can do it.
You Should Never Ask For This...
A common mistake I see people making is asking for free services in their connection request. Especially, when reaching out to a stranger. [This quick video explains what I mean.] Think of it this way: you would never walk up to a person you've never met at an in-person networking event and immediately ask them to help you, right? Well, the same thing goes for LinkedIn. Connect first. Build a relationship second. And, then maybe - just maybe, it will make sense to ask them for help.
