The Connection: Mentoring & Support
In an effort to be as “Resilient Ready” as possible, it is important to communicate with others.?In a recent communication about resilience and mentoring with Susan Bender Phelps , she shared another perspective on resilience and mentoring.
She shared that another aspect of resilience is letting go of the need to do it alone.?She said there is no need to be the Lone Ranger, toughing it out alone. A mentor can provide support.
Are you like me, someone who doesn’t always know how to ask for support??Consider the following reasons why we sometimes don’t ask for support when it is needed: Could it be that:
- you don’t want to burden anyone with your needs,
- you are concerned about privacy and don’t want everyone to know your business, and
- you need support but you are not sure what is available and/or what is possible for you to request.
Susan shared valuable information about the ISSUES. She said when working with a mentor, you can share the previously mentioned ISSUES and learn to ask for support.

Your relationship with your mentor should be private. If you have concerns, discuss them with your mentor. Make sure he/she knows and is willing to honor your concerns and keep them confidential. Do this BEFORE you share any of your business.
Know - that if you need support, your mentor can help you uncover or discover what you need. It’s not a sign of weakness to ask for support, rather it is a sign of self-awareness and maturity to ask for and use the support your mentor can provide or point you to if they cannot.
Remember – a mentor can be a support, ally, and advocate.?Make an effort to learn from him or her.?Also, know that you can have mentors for different things. Your aim is to build skills so you can be “Resilient Ready”.
