The connection between DJing to Sourcing

Anyone who follows me knows that in parallel with a career in talent acquisition leadership, I am also developing a DJ career that is gaining momentum. Music has always been a huge passion of mine, especially electronic music. It’s something that’s been a part of my life for over 25 years.

My passion for music started after I purchased some of my first CDs at Krembo Records shop in Tel Aviv, and from there I was introduced to music at some of the most well-known clubs in Israel, and later internationally. I was blown away by some of the music I heard performed by what I consider to be some of the best DJs in the world. I was always intrigued by the world of DJing. More than once I found myself at parties, envying the DJ and thinking to myself, “I wish that was me.” The ability to control the audience, play music you love, and blow up the dance floor with energy is something that always inspired me.

I thought about attending music school to learn more about how to become a professional DJ, but each time I found myself walking away with an excuse to not pursue it. My amazing wife, who knows how passionate I am about DJing, decided to surprise me and bought me a private lesson with a DJ that I admired. After a single lesson, everything erupted. I was immediately connected to the music and it came naturally to me, so I decided to go all in.

I bought equipment, took another private lesson, and completed a comprehensive online professional DJ course. I learned musical theory, equipment features, how to do a proper mix, and everything that a DJ needs to know to be successful. The truth is that anyone can learn to DJ - all you need is the passion and the drive to make it happen.

What sets you apart as a DJ is the ability to read the audience, choose the right tracks, build the right playlist in perfect order, and tell a story - take the listener on a musical journey. But how do you find the right tracks? The truth is, it's like finding candidates, classic sourcing, and recruiting.

There are countless music sites and an endless selection of genres and subgenres that exist. I discovered that my sourcing skills could help me locate special tracks I like, and I built myself a method that helped me map all the music I enjoy (like mapping talent for Palo Alto Networks) on Spotify, Traxsource, SoundCloud, Beatport, and Mixcloud, which enabled me to build the perfect set. The feeling that I was able to find the ideal track was like identifying the perfect candidate for a niche role at the company.

You must be wondering why I'm telling you all this...

Today, I am hiring two Sourcers to join my team. One role is more senior, where I’m looking for someone with at least five years of experience working for a leading technology organization; this person will have worked closely with key stakeholders and will have utilized data/trends to drive decisions. The second is a junior Sourcer with roughly two years of experience who has a passion for learning. This is a great opportunity to be on the ground floor of the newly built global sourcing organization. Both roles will help streamline processes while focusing on hiring top talent for Palo Alto Networks using creative sourcing methods, just as I have utilized creative methods in both my personal career as a DJ and my professional career within talent acquisition.
