Connecting to Values – A Stepladder to Stop Feeling Overwhelmed

Isn’t it frustrating when you get overwhelmed by the number of things on your to-do list, the life-admin tasks you’ve been dreading to deal with or the infinite laundry pile at home? Some of us get inspired by so many ideas and don’t know where to put their focus. Others feel overwhelmed because they have already used up their energy buckets by the time their workday begins.?

Since returning from holidays, I have found myself feeling rather unsettled due to the sheer number of things I had to deal with. It was as if I came from the most tranquil environment (picture me floating on the sea) to suddenly being confronted with wild stormy waters and huge waves that I’m trying to escape from. Worst of all, once I find myself in such a spiral, it’s incredibly hard to remove myself from it!?

But I made a start in claiming more headspace – and so can you! You will need to be disciplined and strong to follow certain steps to remove yourself from this rut. It is so easy to prioritise other things that strike us as more important, but it is much more essential to stop feeling overwhelmed and gain some headspace, as this will lead to:

-??????????????Reduced stress

-??????????????More productivity

-??????????????Increased Focus

-??????????????Decision making?

-??????????????Creativity?

-??????????????Better Parenting / Friend / Partner?

-??????????????Overall Wellbeing?

We need to reconnect with our values and be in alignment as it makes such a difference to our mental state.

Here is a quick step ladder to help you OUT of feeling overwhelmed and INTO a calmer, more aligned mental state.?

What Might Your Values Be?

Pick 5 that resonate with you.?

Achievement, acknowledgement, adventure, autonomy, balance, aesthetics, belonging, compassion, connectedness, creativity, emotional wellbeing, equality, excellence, fairness, freedom, fun, helping others, honesty, humour, independence, intimacy, leadership, learning, money, organisation, growth, recognition, respect, security, self-expression, tradition, trust

Disclaimer: this is by no means a thorough investigation nor an extensive list of values, but rather a light touch on the subject.?

Clarify?

Set aside a small chunk of time and clarify the meaning of those values for you.?

In another step, think about what actions you associate with those values??

What’s Missing That You Need More Of?

Is it human interactions? Meaningful conversations? Time to care for yourself? Professional development? A new career altogether???

Offer yourself a treat and dedicate some time to whatever you’re not honouring from your values list by spotting the actions that you’re not doing enough of.?

?

In my case, I knew I had to start with physical exercise. When I went for my first run last week after weeks of holiday joy and childcare, I was able to feel my body again, connect with nature, and disconnect from all my to do’s. This was my beginning out of the spiral and I have continued this week.?

What’s your beginning to stop feeling overwhelmed?
