Connecting the UK and Denmark for a sustainable, net-zero future.

Connecting the UK and Denmark for a sustainable, net-zero future.

I’m excited to share that the Viking Link project has officially been completed, marking a major milestone in the UK's path to a cleaner and more secure energy future. It’s been a privilege to support recruitment for this groundbreaking £1.8 billion initiative, and seeing it come to fruition is incredibly rewarding.

Viking Link, the world’s longest land and subsea interconnector, connects the UK and Denmark across 475 miles, with a capacity of 1.4GW. This impressive infrastructure will power up to 2.5 million UK homes with renewable energy. Since its operational start in December 2023, it has already transferred 1,733 GWh of clean energy and is set to deliver over £500 million in consumer savings over its first decade. Additionally, it will cut carbon emissions by 600,000 tonnes in its first year—equivalent to removing 280,000 cars from UK roads.

The project is not just about immediate benefits; it plays a crucial role in advancing the North Sea super-grid vision. By connecting energy markets across Northern Europe, Viking Link supports the integration of abundant offshore wind resources and enhances overall energy security. It is a key component of National Grid’s strategy, alongside future interconnectors like LionLink and Nautilus, which will further bolster the UK’s renewable capacity and help achieve the target of 50GW of offshore wind by 2030.

As National Grid’s Group CEO John Pettigrew highlighted, “Viking Link is a prime example of the international collaboration needed to achieve our energy transition goals. It will not only deliver over £5 billion in efficiencies for UK consumers but also play a critical role in balancing renewable energy across borders.”

It’s been fantastic to contribute to such a transformative project, and I’m eager to see its continued impact on our energy landscape
