Connecting with self, how our names define us.

Connecting with self, how our names define us.

I recently found out there's a whole Tribe named "Karen"! Can you believe it?

Connecting with KAREN

As someone named Karen in Africa, I was curious to explore the roots and connections of my name really early on. Perhaps because growing up a lot of people struggled with pronouncing it right so I will just answer present to what was common in my environment, "KARINE" (sometimes spelled Carine).It wasn't until secondary school that I fully began to enjoy my name pronounced rightly as Karen and when they did, they always wondered how and why I was named so. Therefore, my curiosity grew with me to find out more about this name which in my opinion is iconic ?? .

In 2017, I found out the origins of this name are quite different. "Karen" is of Danish origin, a variant of "Katherine," which means "pure" in Greek. It also has roots in the Germanic name "Karin," meaning "beloved."?In Hebrew, Karen (Keren) means "ray of light" and is considered a beautiful and uplifting name by Jewish people. ?In German, Karen also meant "hard worker".

How cool is it that my name carries so much meaning and it doesn't even appear biblical? This discovery was good enough for a while, I even hosted a legendary 25th birthday party and designed the IVs with my name defined, my latest discovery.

A blast from the past

Fast-forward to 2024, Imagine my delight to find out, we are a whole tribe!

?? The Karen Tribe ?? The Karen people, known for their rich culture and traditions, primarily reside in the mountainous regions of Myanmar and Thailand. They have a unique language, vibrant festivals, and a deep connection to nature. One of their most distinctive features is the practice of wearing elaborate, colorful traditional clothing, often adorned with intricate patterns. Their history is a testament to resilience and the importance of community.

?? Connecting the Dots : So, here I am, a modern day Karen, with a name that spans across cultures and continents. It’s amazing how a simple name can connect us to various parts of the world and their unique histories. Learning about the Karen tribe has not only enriched my understanding of my name but also deepened my appreciation for the diversity and beauty of our global heritage. I am able to resonate with a few characteristics of the Karen name;

  1. I am a Hard worker
  2. Very much a Ray of Light
  3. I also love wearing elaborate, colorful traditional clothing often adorned with intricate patterns.
  4. I always felt naked with a jewelry especially necklaces; One of the most striking aspects of Karen culture is the Long Neck Karen, or Padaung, women, famous for wearing brass coils around their necks. I have also heard that Karen's in some part of the world are considered light headed blondes always asking to see the manager, of course that is a stereotype we are so much bigger than. (I do love to see managers lol, but always for the right reasons)

? Embrace Your Roots ? Whether your name has a story rooted in ancient tribes or modern origins, it’s always exciting to discover its history. So, what’s the story behind your name? DO you know?

Truely names define our identities and how people can perceive us.It is true we have some arguments against naming from the fact that our names were chosen by our parents for reasons best known to them. Some names were given by neighbors, friends , colleagues and mates to our parents .Other names are a combination of letters from two or more names.This is why names can be considered as arbitrary. Secondly, names may not really convey an identity because , identity changes in space and time due?to the complex and multifaceted features of ones true self.Names can also mislead as they may not really match with the character of the bearer.However, from the traditional point of views, most names follow a particular pattern .Personally i have had two names, Dickson and Calistus.Dickson was given to me at birth and is derived from the name Richard considered to mean strength and leadership. During Baptism my name was changed to Calistus.When questioned why this shift of names, the Dutch ?priest ,said Calistus was more fitting to him because in the realm of the spirit, he saw the same character traits of Popes Calistus, 1, II and III in me.Thus,name giving is a spiritual exercise considered to be inspired either by God or the ancestors.
