Connecting with Europe

Connecting with Europe

A year on since Covid-19 reached Europe followed by Post-Brexit, how have European Higher Education Institutions’ internationalisation and global engagement commitments and agendas been impacted? What has the European Higher Education Institutions response been?

Are the internationalisation and global engagement strategies and approaches that were developed in previous years still valid and fit for purpose? Will they see the European Institutions through the storms that have built on their shores with the global climate crisis, Covid 19 and geopolitical tensions?

At the recent EAIE Conference, institutions got together to discuss, share and learn from each other. As we say at The IC “A problem shared, is a problem halved.” At The IC Cafe on 20th April 2021, we will be in conversation with Michelle Stewart (President of EAIE) and Piet Van Hove (Vice-President of EAIE) and hear from them on what the sector in Europe has discussed and what the learning points were.

We will discuss post-Brexit, what the future of UK and European institutional relations will be? How can universities sustain and build new institutional partnerships?

Student mobility takes central stage with EU universities’ internationalisation strategies and with UK universities, there has been a shift in recent years with the way the UK universities engage in student mobility. Post-2023 Erasmus funding what will the infrastructure look like for UK universities, how will mobility partnership continue and what part will the Turing Scheme play in this important student experience activity? During the transition period, it is likely student mobility will take a more prominent role for UK universities internationalisation planning.

Global institutions need to provide international experiences for their graduates, learning in an environment that you are surrounded by people with different experiences and global exposure via study or work experience...We need to continue to build the evidence, to show that the global student mobility is worth the Treasure’s investment.." Viviene Stern, IHEF 2021

At this session we will look at;

  • What can we learn from the EAIE conversation of European institutions?
  • How to build sustainable partnerships between UK and EU institutions?
  • The future of student mobility and the role of the International Office in the delivery of this activity.

Grab a cup of your favourite drink and be part of The IC Global Café for internationalisation and global engagement colleagues joining from all over the world.

Learning from others and sharing experiences is part of the ethos of The IC Global Café and in recent weeks we have heard from colleagues across the sector on various issues affecting institutions globally and learnt from each other through sharing best practice.

Join us for an interesting and thought-provoking discussion. Ask the questions that will give you insight to what you might need to think about for your institution and your own personal development.
