Decarbonizing critical infrastructure | Energy Optimization for Telecom Towers I EMS for decentralized energy
By Mike Rosenberg , CEO of Circadian Technologies
Returning from Riyadh, I’m still energized by the warmth, hospitality, and insightful discussions at the Connected World KSA and Small Cells World Summit . The events showcased Saudi Arabia's ambitious drive toward digital transformation and global leadership in telecom innovation. Here are my highlights, reflections, and key insights from this ground-breaking experience.
Scaling Across the Value Chain
Abdulrahman Almoaiqel of TAWAL outlined Saudi Arabia's role as a hub for digital innovation, exploring how telecom infrastructure is evolving to support electric vehicle charging, satellite communications, aviation, edge computing, industrial networks, and smart city frameworks. TAWAL’s innovative solutions, including private networks and backhaul-as-a-service, demonstrate a commitment to enhancing connectivity while transforming traditional approaches to infrastructure.
Giga-Projects Fuelling Small Cell Innovation
Saudi Arabia’s giga-projects, backed by $860 billion in planned investments, are reshaping the telecom landscape. @Abdulrahman Aleidi of TAWAL highlighted the role of these mega-initiatives in driving advanced small cell deployments and private networks, creating seamless connectivity for both indoor and outdoor applications.
At the Cutting Edge of Small Cell Technology
Several talks explored how cutting-edge innovations are redefining telecom. From Riyadh-based ACES’ focus on smart stadiums using network slicing and coverage maximization for Saudi’s thriving football league, to Dr. Doudou Samb of PROSE Technologies showcasing embedded AI in small cells, the industry’s potential is limitless. These advancements promise smarter urban environments and enhanced user experiences.
Data Centers: A Nexus of Opportunity
The keynote panel, “Building a Digital Saudi Arabia: Vision 2030 and Beyond,” explored the intersection of renewable energy and hyperscale data centers. Abdullah Abobakr highlighted a record-low LCOE of $10/MWh from recent renewable energy projects. With a vast population base reachable within a 30ms latency, Saudi Arabia’s appeal to international and local hyperscalers, including aramco digital , is evident.

Energy Transformation: Zero-Carbon Networks
Ayman Alharbi of Red Sea Global unveiled the world’s first carbon-neutral 5G network, alongside the Red Sea Project’s 1.3GWh lithium-powered microgrid. These initiatives position Saudi Arabia as a leader in sustainable telecom infrastructure, setting the stage for a greener, more connected future.
Reflections on Innovation and Impact
Exporting Saudi Innovation to Africa
Saudi Arabia’s expertise in energy-efficient small cells and smart stadiums could revolutionize rural connectivity in Africa. These technologies have the potential to bridge the digital divide, driving last-mile connectivity while maintaining energy efficiency.
Decarbonized, Decentralized, Digitized
With 35,000 telecom towers in Saudi Arabia—nearly rivaling Nigeria’s 40,000—the transition from diesel-powered off-grid towers to hybrid solar systems is gaining momentum. Innovations in private networks and decentralized storage, supported by renewable energy, promise to pave the way for future smart cities and grids. Virtual power plants (VPPs) could play a critical role as wind and solar adoption increases.
Personal Highlights
One of the most rewarding aspects of this trip was connecting with inspiring industry professionals, including Ali Alkhars and Hussam Alzaatreh, EEC, PMP, CEM, AOS, CMA . I’m also grateful for the organizers, Simon Fletcher and Prima Castelino , whose dedication made this inaugural event a tremendous success. On a lighter note, my son Marcus’ LEGO telecom towers proved a surprising hit, underscoring how creativity and innovation transcend all ages.
As we continue to explore the intersections of decarbonization, decentralization, and digitalization, Circadian Technologies remains committed to enabling energy innovation through better data quality. The conversations and ideas shared at these events reaffirmed the transformative potential of telecom to drive global change.
Here’s to continuing the journey toward a more connected, sustainable future. Riyadh, you’ve set the bar high.
