Connected Leaders

Connected Leaders

It's already February...it's time to revisit those New Year's resolutions we made with such determination, only to see them often vanish like the "froth of a cappuccino". You know the ones I'm talking about – the resolutions that always start with "this year, I'll eat better, exercise more, meditate more often and maybe being more active professionally on social media..."

Did you manage to stick to these promises ? Are you MORE visible on professional networks? If you're like most of us, you probably had good intentions about your online presence, but life got in the way, and those intentions slipped away.

Understanding The Motivation

But why did you want to be more visible on social media in the first place? Was it to improve your network or to boost your company's visibility? Maybe both?

I've noticed two extremes among the leaders I follow. On one hand, there are those who share every details of their work and personal life, flooding their audience with constant updates. On the other hand, some share but never engage, staying in the shadows, almost invisible.

The best approach is somewhere in between – being present without overwhelming your audience. You have a great opportunity to stand out by sharing your story, your vision, and your values.

I've mentioned it a few times and you probably know it already, today's employees or candidates are looking for employers who align with their values. They want to be inspired, connected, and share a common belief in the organisation. When seeking opportunities, they are attracted to visionary leaders who stand out, take a strong stance, and motivate them.

But how can you be authentic without showing some vulnerability? It's a valid concern. The leaders I admire all have one thing in common: they're genuine. What you see is what you get with them. They don't try to copy other leaders or put on an act. Their openness creates a strong connection with their audience and shows that they're real people. This authenticity builds loyalty among employees and customers and breaks the notion that a leader must always be perfect.

If you are just starting in this exercise, rest assured, it is never too late to give a fresh boost to your efforts. Take the example of Richard Branson , the founder of Virgin Group, who regularly uses LinkedIn to share articles, inspiring stories, and reflections on entrepreneurship and leadership. Or Melinda Gates , who uses it to raise awareness of important social issues. Or more recently, Snoop Dogg ! Even the famous rapper has decided to share on this network.

I want to read more from Swiss CEOs... although there are of course a few I really enjoy following.

So Where to start?

If you have no idea, for the first post, you could write a short article about your vision for the year, your challenges or successes as a leader, an observation in your field of expertise... Don't aim for perfection; it will never be perfect at the beginning...it will come!

Embracing the Power of LinkedIn:

Let's dive into practical steps to create a linkedIn profile that really stands out:

  • Recognise the Potential: Understand how LinkedIn can boost your personal and professional brand and open up new networking and business opportunities.
  • Strategic Positioning: See your LinkedIn profile as a powerful tool for connecting with industry peers and potential partners.
  • Captivating Storytelling: Share the fascinating story of how your company began (Why, How, When)
  • Showcasing Uniqueness: Highlight what makes you unique in your industry, setting you apart from the crowd. Back it up your data or even better engaging stories. This will help you to build trust and credibility.
  • Active Visibility: Once your profile is nearly perfect - Go further - Actively interact with your network. Offer valuable insights and solutions to industry challenges to establish yourself as a thought leader. Be consistent, open and honest in your communication.
  • Personal Storytelling: Share your personal experiences, your successes, mistakes, challenges and values. This will appeal to a wider audience. It should be done subtly and not too frequently (from my point of view!)
  • Acknowledgment: Who doesn't like to be recognised by the Boss? Recognise and appreciate your team, this will foster a positive company culture.
  • Aligning Strategies: One last thing, try to connect your personal LinkedIn strategy with your company's broader communication plan for consistency.

As you work on maximising your LinkedIn profile's impact, remember that it can help you build momentum and achieve faster results. Embrace your uniqueness, share your story and here's to a year filled with a vibrant social media presence! Are you ready??

LinkedIn is a platform for many things. As such, it depends how you use it and what you use it for that defines everything. If you doomscroll infinitely it is just a waste of time. If you understand this platform is good to build brand recognition and gain some visibility, then it can be great. It’s all about the intention and the expectation.

Thanks for sharing, Nathalie. The practical steps towards enhancing one's LinkedIn presence are actionable and insightful, offering a roadmap for leaders to amplify their influence effectively. What I mainly appreciate about your article is that it serves as a motivating call to action for leaders to harness the power of social media not just for visibility, but for meaningful engagement. I particularly like the call for leaders to be genuine and to share their vulnerabilities as a strength rather than a weakness: it encourages a shift from a perfection-seeking mindset to one of genuine connection, which not only fosters loyalty among employees and customers but also sets a leader apart.

That's the price for an already 15 years old good news: easyJet and VINCI Airports continue, continue and continue, indeed, their as tuneful as efficient operational relations in Lyon. And so many passengers continue to be grateful. Congatulation! I enjoy with you.

En 2002 (il y a 20 ans déjà!) j'écrivais ceci : ? La dérive des progrès technologiques en matière de communication, c'est quand les gens sont frénétiquement connectés au monde et dramatiquement déconnectés d'eux mêmes.? I still believe the same. Le poison est toujours dans la dose. Wisdom is strength.
