Connected Communities

Tomorrow, the City of Cincinnati Planning Commission is expected to take a vote on a policy priority called “Connected Communities.” This is the first of three key votes to enact these much needed reforms.

Several years ago, we assembled a group of stakeholders with then-Councilmember Greg Landsman to begin a discussion about how Cincinnati could grow housing and small business development as a result of the passage of Issue 7. That conversation led to the delivery of the Chamber’s "Embracing Growth: Principles for Regional Housing" report, and policy priorities to increase housing in our region. Thanks to policy and administrative leaders including former Councilwoman Liz Keating (now the Chamber’s VP of Government Affairs), current Mayor Aftab Pureval , City Councilman Reginald Harris, MSW, LISW-S , City Councilman Jeff Cramerding , and City Manager Sheryl L. , we’ve seen unprecedented engagement and thoughtful policy work that has led to a series of proposals to reform the City’s zoning code, the latest of which is called “Connected Communities.”

The Cincinnati Regional Chamber has taken a pro-growth position in support of this policy proposal, and we’ve urged City Council to enact the reforms. These reforms will encourage the construction of more housing, create more economic opportunities within neighborhood business districts, and position Cincinnati as a place where growth is prioritized.

This is not the only way we can seed growth in our community, but it is a huge start. The City of Cincinnati learned today that in the last year, it’s population has grown by more than 1,600 people. We hope the City – and the region – grows even faster in future years, and to do so, we’ll need more housing and more economic opportunity. Connected Communities is a sensible, pro-business, and low-regulation policy that will help drive that growth.

We urge support, and look forward to its passage in the next month.
