If you’re looking for career inspiration or need some help to kick start your transition from education and into your first job – then you should consider the Business School Career Mentoring Scheme.
We have a broad range of Mentors who are offering to help you during this time. They come from our own Alumni and industry, from companies like JPMorgan Chase, Barclays and Ernst & Young. Their expertise spans several industries and career stages, so there will definitely be someone who could help you. Mentoring happens across two waves, each covering approx 5 months, Oct - Feb: primarily for 2nd/3rd year students and Feb - Jun: primarily for Masters and 1st year’s. You will be able to contact your mentor between two and five hours per month, where meetings are held virtually, or face-to-face if it is safe to do so and regulations allow it. Capped-off by an end-of-year ceremony next June.
Applications for the autumn Mentoring scheme are now open, so if you’re interested, please complete and submit this application form. The deadline to apply is the 9th of October 2020.
Hear’s how mentoring helped final-year Business Management student Hannah feel inspired about her future career.
What did you do?
"I have had such a wonderful experience taking part in the Career Mentoring scheme. I chose to be a part of the scheme as I wanted to stay focused on my career and improve my skills, networks and self-confidence. As I was in the final year of my degree I had to be extremely organised and multitask conflicting demands and priorities, whilst giving attention to my professional development. I was matched with a Supply Chain Coordinator at Burberry."
What was your experience?
"What I enjoyed most was visiting my mentor at Burberry HQ in Westminster for our meetings, the atmosphere was inspiring and creative. I developed my interpersonal skills and with this experience, I was able to build a strong bond with my mentor to promote a positive and collaborative professional relationship."
What did you learn from taking part?
"One surprising benefit of a mentor is that it increased my drive to achieve a graduate role and excited me to pursue my chosen career path. My mentor provided a great ‘safe’ place to bounce off ideas and help me decide which way to go in certain situations. She helped me to learn about myself and work out how and where I should be heading."
Mentor: Kinga Kosmider (Supply Chain Coordinator at Burberry) –
"The main reason mentoring is so successful is because it works both ways. As a mentor, you have an opportunity to advise basing on your own experience which helps a mentee achieve significant goals on a career ladder but also their personal life. Knowing you’re giving back to society by helping others is fulfilling but also trains you to be a great leader. Career and development goals are extremely important to students during their final year and mentoring helps them perform better and increase job satisfaction once they step out of university. It is a great chance to open the eyes of both parties involved!"
The Business School Employability Office held an online ceremony to celebrate all the contributions and achievements of mentors and mentees who have been involved in the career-focused mentoring scheme during the 2019-2020 academic year.
The annual ceremony was due to take place on the 4th of June which was sadly canceled. However, the ceremony took place virtually and the event was broadcasted online via YouTube. We would love for you to join us in celebrating the achievements of our students and mentor community.
