On that Sunday, I spent the entire day learning the art of calligraphy at a special in-person workshop. The day was highly anticipated, and as I practiced each brush stroke, I worked diligently to approach perfection. This wasn’t just any class; it was part of Master Sha’s Calligraphy program.

The exercise reminded me of my elementary school days at a Catholic school, where we practiced cursive writing. Precision was crucial, as each letter had to fit within specific parameters for width and length. If we went beyond these, we had to start all over again, which was incredibly frustrating. It was a practice that demanded focus.

At 16, my school sent me to a career psychologist to explore my future academic and career options. This two-month program involved various psychological exercises, including writing a story on a blank sheet of paper, drawing an apple tree, and organising a sequence of events in 39 boxes. The advisor was impressed by the perfect handwriting dimensions and the apple tree's symmetry. This precision, likely due to my schooling, was unusual to him.

Reflecting on these memories, I returned to the present moment as a master teacher reviewed my work, which was slowly fading from the water paper. He pointed out gaps in my calligraphy and suggested they might reflect my life challenges. I listened with interest, fascinated by the idea that calligraphy could reveal personal insights.

The career program had revealed that my hidden talents were in journalism and detective work, much to my surprise, as I had always been interested in studying interior design. However, I ended up studying computer science, a popular choice in the 90s. Although I didn’t pursue a career in journalism or detective work, these skills have been invaluable in my coaching business. I help clients research, develop pitches, and engage with their target audiences. I use investigative skills to gather information, identify ideal clients, and solve problems.

While I never pursued interior design professionally, my passion for art and design remains. Before and during the COVID-19 pandemic, I often met clients in artistically rich venues, such as hotel cafes in London, to inspire creativity and energy. My varied background and experiences have equipped me with a unique skill set that I use to help my clients build their businesses creatively.
