I have strived to grow and develop throughout my professional career so far and it has led to me forming a strong passion for women in leadership and how it can truly innovate and drive a workplace forward. As women, we may not always realize our full potential, but once it is unleashed, it has a direct route to our success! When women become leaders, we provide a different set of skills and imaginative perspectives which drive effective solutions. CONMED believes in the power of engaged talent, and we are fortunate to have many amazing female leaders supporting our organization. Read below to learn more about Emily Belconis, Senior Project Manager.
Can you tell us a little about yourself and what has contributed to your success so far in the medical device industry?
While I have a Mechanical Engineering degree, I have worked in a variety or project management roles throughout my entire career. I am a big-picture thinker and appreciate being able to touch all aspects of a project lifecycle. Having worked in various industries, I find myself drawn to the passion within the medical device industry. The projects we work on and the products we support have an immediate impact on patients’ lives. I love hearing personal stories from surgeons, patients and nurses and I feel empowered knowing that the work I do will make someone’s life better.
As a female leader, what has been the most significant barrier in your career?
I have had my fair share of challenges throughout my career, but by far the most significant barrier has been myself. My feelings of self-doubt have been something I am constantly needing to overcome. Reminding myself that I will always figure out a solution or overcome a problem forces me to have the self-confidence I need to be a strong leader. These feelings have also taught me to lean on my teams. I know there is no way I will ever know everything, but building strong and diverse teams can ensure no problem is unsolvable.
What advice would you give the next generation of female leaders?
Do not fear a challenge. Often, we want to be a part of the project that is going smoothly or only work with teams that have been successful. In my opinion, one of the best ways to gain experience and grow your knowledge is to face challenges head on. Some of the most growth and biggest successes come from our most challenging times.
At CONMED, we embrace a people-first culture that starts with a mission to support our healthcare partners and the patients they serve, and we believe in the power of engaged talent. I am grateful to have strong female leaders across the company to look up to!
