Our minds try to process information in the simplest way possible - so that our conceptual understanding & what we perceive is congruent with one another.
This is mainly applicable to the size of objects (Size-congruency). But might also explain why, when we know someone is calling from far away, our 1st reaction is to speak a bit louder (most prevalent during the era of landlines :D)
