Can Nuclear Energy Help Meet US Climate Goals? ?

Moderator Cindy Folkers, a Radiation and Health Hazard Specialist, with Beyond?Nuclear. She is an expert focusing on ionizing radiation and its impact on health and the environment, from both a scientific and historical perspective. She advocates for fully protecting the health of females and early life stages in the face of uncertain health outcomes. She’s been published in The New Press, BMJ Paediatrics Open, University of California Press, and Journal of the History of Biology.

The panel of experts include:

The Honorable Dr. Gregory B. Jaczko former chair, U. S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. He was focused on the NRC being a decisive safety regulator with the confidence of the public. Dr. Jaczko focused on the safety of existing nuclear reactors and radioactive materials, implementing a predictable safety review process for license applications, ensuring the agency conducts thorough environmental reviews, and promoting strong enforcement and accountability.

Dr. Mark Z. Jacobson’s Stanford University Professor of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Director of Stanford’s Atmosphere/Energy Program, and author of?No?Miracles?Needed:?How Today’s Technology Can Save Our Climate and Clean Our Air. His career has focused on better understanding air pollution and global warming problems and developing large-scale clean, renewable energy solutions to them. Jacobson’s finding about black carbon’s climate effects resulted in his invitation to testify to the U.S. House of Representatives and formed the original scientific basis for several proposed laws and policies including; U.S. Senate Reports, US Senate Bills, US House Bills, European Parliament Resolutions, and California State Bills.

Dr. M. V. Ramana, is Professor and Simons Chair in Disarmament, Global and Human Security at the School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, University of British Columbia, and?Graduate Program Director of its Master of Public Policy and Global Affairs program. His research areas include international security and energy supply, with a particular focus on topics related to nuclear energy and fissile materials that can be used to make nuclear weapons. He is the author of?The Power of Promise: Examining Nuclear Energy in India.
