In a bold move highlighting concerns over corruption and mismanagement, Congress Member of Legislative Assembly (MLA) Ravindra Dhangekar staged a protest in front of Pune municipal commissioner Vikram Kumar's residence. The protest, held on Thursday, aimed to draw attention to alleged irregularities in various decisions taken by the civic chief's administration.
Dhangekar emphasized that despite numerous letters and complaints in the past, the municipal commissioner continued to push forward proposals and projects benefiting members of the ruling party. One glaring example cited by Dhangekar was the allocation of ?137 crore intended for the PMC-run Atal Bihari Vajpayee Medical College project to specific wards, rather than adhering to its original healthcare purpose.
"The allocated funds for a project cannot be diverted to other work," Dhangekar asserted, expressing concern over the misuse of funds meant for essential health services. He accused the administration of channeling significant amounts of money, originally designated for healthcare initiatives, into unrelated projects under the guise of drainage and sewerage developments.
Despite Dhangekar's efforts to address these issues through formal channels, including reaching out to the chief minister, deputy chief ministers, and the police department, no satisfactory action has been taken. This lack of response led Dhangekar to take a more public stand with the protest at the commissioner's house.
Dhangekar highlighted the dire state of PMC-run hospitals and the alarming trend of diverting health funds towards non-health-related projects. He pointed out specific instances, such as irregularities in awarding tenders, rapid issuance of tenders and work orders by PMC, and questionable practices favouring the ruling party's agenda.
The core focus of Dhangekar's protest remains the diversion of health funds towards non-health projects, a deviation he claims is unprecedented in the last thirty years. Despite repeated attempts, Vikram Kumar, the municipal commissioner, remained unavailable for comment.
