Architecture is no longer just a product of design and construction but also a vehicle of a social action. Communication and mediation are key to this process. The role of architects has to do more with interdisciplinary teamwork than with authorship. This event has been developed as a horizontal workshop between professors and students in the field of the MACA Global Communication Project course during the 2016-17 academic year.
In 2017, we co-curated in Madrid COCA’17 MediActions. The First International Congress in Architectural Communication. An event that created common spaces between multiple disciplines and social agents. In order to introduce the function of mediation and communication in architecture, the activities of this Congress will focus on forming a network of mutual knowledge exchange among participants, selected projects and invited guests.
The project seeks to generate an innovative learning experience away from the simulation, turning the exercise into a real assignment: the design of an event as a complex transversal activity with times, responsibilities and commitments that must be solved by the team addressing from the theoretical contents, the design of communicative dynamics and the interaction with different agents up to the spatial and environmental project of an event impregnated with a character between the scientific and the ludic-festive.
As a set, a lightweight, inflatable, rolling kit is designed to move the headquarters of this nomadic congress through different areas of the ETSAM, COAM, the Ministry of Development around the city of Madrid. 120 congress members could participate in this scenario in five sessions with thematic tables on pedagogy, instrumentation or citizenship. Counting on the presence of a total of 25 multidisciplinary guests from fields such as art, philosophy or literature.
COCA 17 was an event organized at Master in Architectural Communication (MaCA) at the Escuela Técnica Superior de Arquitectura de Madrid (ETSAM), with the support of the Hypermedia group in collaboration with the Scuola di Dottorato in Architettura e Design de la Università degli Studi di Genova (ADD).
