Congratulations on your promotion!

Michael Kinson has a Bachelor of Science degree from Unity College and in 2021, while working full-time, earned his associate degree in business management with a specialization in Cybersecurity from Eastern Gateway Community College, graduating with Summa Cum Laude honors.

Mike previously consulted for Boston Public Works, but after starting a family, he began searching for opportunities closer to home. Having worked in the public sector, he knew he wanted to continue his career in that direction and immediately began to search for a position with the State of New Hampshire.

Mike feels he was fortunate for his resume to be accepted by Ted Kitsis seven years ago, and he’s looking forward to spending the rest of his career here. The NHDOT is a vital entity for the state, and the work we do is both highly visible as well as impactful. Mike says, “Driving over a new bridge or stretch of highway knowing that in some way I’ve been a part of its completion provides a sense of pride you don’t get from many other forms of work.” You can see how your work affects not only your department, but anyone who travels in the State. ?

His favorite project so far has been completely rebuilding how our Performance Measures are generated by translating Microsoft Access reports into live Oracle SQL views. This often comes with unique challenges that are puzzles that need to be solved and resolved, allowing him to think creatively as he establishes more efficient ways to retrieve and manipulate data.

Depending on the time of year and what the needs of field work are, a typical day varies. “Recently I’ve been writing SQL codes; working with DOIT to get laptops for trainees or returning devices no longer needed; archiving projects in Bluebeam; building projects in Bluebeam to be used by Contract Administrators for storing and tracking construction data; updating missing dates from older iPDweb projects to clean up data; updating monthly performance measures and resolving errors found; answering calls from the field with tech support questions that do not require DOIT intervention; and reviewing the DOIT web page to identify missing or broken links, content, etc. and resolving them.”

Mike shadowed two engineers in the field to learn the challenges that they face, and in his new role will be working to resolve the advances in technology. For example, instead of hammering wooden stakes into the ground to mark out the work and elevations, contractors are now using Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) devices to measure limits, quantities, and more. One of his roles has been to train our field personnel on these devices.

His proudest moment at NHDOT?? “Earning this new position of Construction Management Systems Administrator,” he says. Congratulations, Mike!
