Congratulations Peter Ramsey, ‘Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Director – Golden Globes Winner: Best Animated Feature

Last night, Peter Ramsey won his first Golden Globe for “Spider-Man: Into the Spiderverse,” a film that he co-directed alongside Bob Persichetti and Rodney Rothman. This also marks the first Golden Globes for Sony Pictures.

In 2012, Peter Ramsey became the first Black director of a major animated film when he directed Dreamworks’ “Rise of the Guardians.”

During his acceptance speech, Ramsey began to stress the importance of the film’s diversity, by crowning a new Spiderman who was both African American and Puerto Rican.

While his speech was cut short thankfully, he was able to finish backstage with members of the press.

“We all felt deeply the idea that anyone can have this kind of experience. Anyone can share in this myth, be in this kind of legend, be this kind of hero,” Ramsey said.

Reactions from fans around the globe are sharing their sentiments of seeing someone on screen who looked like them.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse’ Director Peter Ramsey Finishes His Acceptance Speech

“Well thanks guys don’t be upset that’s the way it goes in Hollywood land. Trying to remember what I was saying because I’m still so stunned that we won. Thank you. Basically, it was just the idea that we all felt deeply that the idea that anyone can have this kind of experience.

Anyone can share in this myth, in this kind of legend, be this kind of hero, and want these kinds of things. And the story of Miles Morales, was a way to crystalize all those feelings into one character.

This African-American/Puerto Rican kid from Brooklyn, we all started with a fantastic vision that Phil Lord laid out, from his very first treatment, really a vision of what this movie could be was there and I think that’s what made us all sign on and want to give our all to the idea.

So just like Phil wrote in the little mission statement that we all read in that treatment, anyone can wear the mask, everyone is powerful, everyone is necessary, we’re all counting on you. And that’s the spirit of this movie it really touches and moves all of us that people are taking that message to heart.“
