Congratulations to our Chair, Ane M. M. Uggla, with the 75 years
What has shaped you as a person?
That is a very broad question, and I am shaped by many things. If I were to list them, I would say:
I am shaped by my upbringing, by a foundation based on diligence, work, and duty, to do things with care, and with a conservative, national view which is influenced by my grandfather and my parents. It was also my father who taught me that everything is possible, everything is solvable.
I am shaped by the sea, maritime life. I come from a family of seafarers, it is our DNA. That is my background, the core of my work, and my natural element. My great grandfather was from the Danish island R?m?, from a family of whalers. He married Anna from the Danish town Drag?r whose family were seafarers.
I am shaped by the Company’s more than 100-year history, by how businesses must constantly adapt and look to the future if they are to stay relevant.
I am shaped by my education both at universities in Denmark and Sweden and by the education given to me through life. I have lived a great part of my life abroad and travelled extensively. Our Group is present in more than 130 countries, many of which I have visited. This provides a global perspective and a deep respect for other people, for differences.
I am shaped by my work in A.P. Moller-Maersk (which I left a year ago) and my work in the A.P. Moller Foundation which, in contrast to the companies, has a national focus. I am impressed by the idealism and engagement that goes into working for a cause – big or small – across the country.
I am shaped by over 50 years in Sweden with my beloved husband, Peder, and his Swedish officer lineage as well as the gift of having two sons. By the Swedish nature, archipelago, cliffs, sea, and light, forests to hide in and national parks to hike in. Using nature for ice skating, skiing, and hikes. My husband was a great mentor and gave me freedom. Having a sense of belonging in both Denmark and Sweden is very enriching.
I am shaped by my 13 years at Svenska R?da Korset (The Swedish Red Cross) where I, among other things, learned 'alla m?nniskors lika v?rde' (the equal value of all people).
?
What values and beliefs have guided you throughout your career?
Our strong values (constant care, humbleness, uprightness, our employees, and our name) have guided me throughout my upbringing and my entire career. Additionally, being able to adapt.
My great grandfather, Peder M?rsk M?ller, shipwrecked on the barque Valkyrien in 1883. He was at that time 50 years old and responsible for a large family. He decided to pursue further education by becoming a captain of steamships, which he viewed as the ships of the future, at the age of 50. To actively leave behind an era of sailing ships.
Daring to throw yourself into a new energy era at that age is for me a sign of courage and responsibility and a good example of the survivability of the Company through 100 years – during depression, crises, and wars. We have had to constantly adapt to geopolitical challenges, had to step into the future with great strides, just like today with the green energy transition. I see a parallel here.

What have many years at the top of the business world taught you about life?
The top of the business world is tough. Important and difficult decisions which have consequences for many people are made constantly.
For example, we sold Maersk Oil & Gas to transform A.P. Moller – Maersk into a focused transport and logistics company. We established A.P. Moller Holding and restructured A.P. Moller – Maersk.
It was not a simple process and with many discussions along the way, but it was the right decision.
The business world also offers positive experiences, learnings every day, meeting many creative and capable people.
And I have an immense respect for the many people that work hard for us.
?
What considerations have you had since handing over the torch in Maersk?
I am still active. I am Chair of the Board for the A.P. Moller Foundation (A.P. M?ller og Hustru Chastine Mc-Kinney M?llers Fond til almene Formaal), in A.P. Moller Holding, and in the A.P. Moller Support Fund (Den A.P. M?llerske St?ttefond).
With that said, I have in many matters passed the torch to Robert. I am deeply grateful that someone from the next generation has the courage and ability to take on this task. Of own will. It requires hard, hard work, constant focus, and deep commitment. As well as skill.
A.P. Moller Holding – with its capable team – manages the business-related activities of the foundation. It drives ‘nyttig virksomhed’ (have a positive impact on society) in the spirit of A.P. M?ller, ensuring that coming generations can continue to contribute to society through donations.
And as principal owner of A.P. Moller – Maersk, we can allow ourselves to keep the long-term perspectives top of mind.
That is a privilege.
