Congratulations to 2020 CUNA Award winners

Congratulations to 2020 CUNA Award winners

This week, I had the pleasure of meeting and congratulating the 2020 CUNA Award winners in a virtual reception (complete with breakout room selfies).

Every year CUNA award winners inspire me by exemplifying what not-for-profit financial cooperatives are capable of.

But this year’s recipients blew me away with everything they did as financial first responders in the middle of a worldwide pandemic and the resulting economic slowdown.

In addition to meeting the day-to-day needs of their members, our 2020 award winners found ways to keep local businesses afloat, created financial literacy programs for homeless and other vulnerable populations, and stepped up the fight against abusive lenders when folks are most at need.

The CUNA Award website will be updated in the coming days with photos, stories, and content from this week’s virtual award ceremony.

I hope you’ll join me in congratulating these amazing credit unions for their dedication in the face of adversity.

League and AACUC partnering for DEI webinar

Heartland Credit Union Association (HCUA) is partnering with the African-American Credit Union Coalition (AACUC) to host a free two-part credit union DEI virtual event on Feb. 16 and March 16. “Be Better. Do Better” will be a candid conversation on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) for credit union leaders. Hear from regional and national industry experts on why the credit union industry needs to address DEI challenges and what actions we can take to become more inclusive as individuals, in our credit unions and in our communities.

Foundation receives President’s Volunteer Service Award

The National Credit Union Foundation was awarded the Gold President’s Volunteer Service Award for the 2019-20 school year on behalf of America’s Credit Unions. Over the past year, the pandemic disrupted volunteer activity and the education landscape, but credit unions continued to support communities and live out their mission across the country.

360-degree advocacy

  • We joined nearly 600 other organizations calling on Congress to include temporary, targeted liability protections in the latest COVID relief legislation.
  • We supported NCUA’s proposal to allow federal credit unions to purchase mortgage servicing rights.
  • We wrote to the SBA highlighting several issues credit unions are having with the latest round of the Paycheck Protection Program.
  • We wrote to the House Financial Services Committee outlining ways Congress can ensure credit unions remain in position to serve members.
  • We wrote to Acting CFPB Director Dave Uejio to address several pressing issues and offered to provide any necessary feedback, data, and expertise that would assist the bureau during this transition period.
  • We called on the CFPB to ensure all users of consumer financial data comply with consumer data protection requirements.
  • NCUA Chairman Todd Harper will host a webinar Feb. 11 to discuss his priorities, supervisory activities, and recently issued guidance and regulations, among other topics.
