Yesssssssss! I've hit the first milestone on YouTube ??
May ended sweeter than usual when I woke up and saw that my YouTube channel had hit 1000 subscribers.
It has been a long journey.
I joined YouTube just a few days after Singapore announced the lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Between 2020 to 2022, I was sharing video tips, tutorials and tech reviews on my YouTube channel.
Then in 2023 when I turned 40, I pivoted my channel to not just share video tips but also inject some personal stories in as part of my content pillars.
I started going LIVE sharing my entrepreneurial journey while being a caregiver, and then I documented my personal experience in my 40s.
It was well received.
But, I was stuck on 400+ subscribers for the longest time.
The next thing I know, bam, 1K and counting.
How did that happen?
Here’s what I think happened:
?? YouTube Algorithm Update
Todd, Director of Growth and Discovery, mentioned in an interview that they are working hard to support small creators by pushing out their videos more.
He also mentioned, "don't think algorithm, think audience". This gives me a fresh perspective on how I create my videos.
At the same time, not be so stressed about algorithms all the time.

?? Give What Audiences Want
Remember I mentioned how I pivoted my channel by sharing more about my journey instead of educational content?
It's been almost 6 months since that pivot and I feel that I have found my grounding.
Also, sometimes, it's okay to create videos that you yourself would watch.
The video that got me 1000 subscribers was my tutorial video on OpusClip . I simply share the steps on how I create my short clips from my long-form videos.
?? Be Consistent
When I say consistency, it's not just about the schedule you're uploading, how many videos you upload a week, and what's the timing like.
But it is about being consistent in how you want to show yourself throughout your other social media as well.
For example, ever since the pivot of my YouTube channel sharing personal stories, this newsletter "Beyond Videos" has followed suit.
I share my 40s journey, running a business while being a caregiver, and YouTube / video insights.
In summary, if you're a small YouTube creator, push through.
Find your grounding, and find out what your audience wants from you.
And remember, YouTube is a marathon. It is a journey.
If you ask me (even without the 1000 subscribers), I'd still choose YouTube to share what I know.
