Confused on Purpose
One of my favorite characters on TV was Michael Scott, of NBC's The Office.
He was silly and caring and pretty clueless in many situations. But many people liked him because he was REAL.
On many occasions he would say shocking things that would stop down a conversation.
But he was also very relatable.
He would ask questions that everyone one thinking. He would give responses to situations with high emotion that we all felt. He avoided work when it was frustrating.
THAT is the characteristic I can relate to the most!
Many of us can relate to not wanting to do certain tasks. That's no surprise.
But what might miss is how we throw obstacles in our own way, so we don't have to do the work. For example...
I might need to check my own sales activities for the last 30 days. That requires that I pull up data from a couple spots, look at the activity side by side, and make observations about what is not working.
That sounds like torture to me.
So instead, I might go research sales management platforms to collect the data and give me weekly reports to my email.
Nothing wrong with being more efficient, right?
So let's say the next week it's time for sales reports again. This week I pull up all the data and make some observations, but stomach starts rumbling. So I go to the kitchen... and never get back to the report.
Once again I have created a new task or faked some confusion to avoid the work.
Here are some things I tell myself when I don't want to do sales reports:
"I'm not sure I understand this data?"

"I don't know if this is enough to go on?"
"How do I know what the problem really is?"
Does any of this sound familiar? Michael Scott did the same things. He would flat our stare at the camera in confusion when he didn't want to answer a question.
Don't let self confusion stop you from making decisions you need to make. See another way confusion can stop you from progress in the video below.

3 年Jake Jordan, there are times I can be very inventive in ways to avoid unpleasant tasks! With those I've got to do a couple of things.... first I have to truly assess if whatever I'm avoiding is truly a priority..... If it is I've either got to find a way to motivate myself in a way to get it done or do what I like to a point that I have the revenue to pay someone else to do it! Yes, I struggle with it at times!
