Confused Child of a Very Successful Parent on Linkedin
In this fast-paced world, where everyone is trying to get somewhere, we often scroll through the exultant and successful stories of individuals on Linkedin. Some are celebrating an achievement, a promotion, a collaboration and now even personal updates. In all the self-appraisal, self-applauding, the only being that often gets skipped is the perplexed Child of the very successful parent on Linkedin. The narration remains the same whether you are a CTO, CEO, CXO, HOD (and the list goes on) that behind every successful parent stands a confused child, pondering how to write his/her success story, or even where to begin…
Now that I have your attention, let us understand the challenge here.
It is a sad reality that parents are increasingly failing to provide their children with the guidance, support and attention they need towards career and life journey. No wonder 71% students say they are either confused or lost. Too often, parents are focused on their own professional lives to the exclusion of their children's wellbeing and development. As I traveled around the country and spoke with thousands of students, it became clear that our kids are struggling to find direction in life. They are overwhelmed by options and lack the tools to make informed decisions about their future while their parents are successfully updating their profiles and posts on social media.
We cannot ignore this problem any longer. As parents we need to ensure our kids have opportunity for meaningful conversations about their hopes and dreams; confusions and challenges in a most candid manner . At the end of the day, it is up to us as parents to take responsibility for our children's futures. We must ensure that they have access to our time and energy same way the way our subordinates or supervisors have.
For many of us, our children's career decisions can be difficult to accept and support. We may think that we know what is best for them and struggle with their unwillingness to follow the same path we have taken. However, it is important to allow our children the freedom to choose their future. One way parents can do this is by sharing their own career journey. This can help children gain a greater understanding of the different paths they can take and the potential challenges and opportunities they may encounter.
By telling our stories, we can provide valuable insights into our successes and failures, as well as our decisions and how they have shaped us. These conversations should be open-ended to allow for questions and dialogue. We can also share our current reflections on our experiences and the lessons we have learned along the way. These conversations will help to ensure that our children are more informed when making their own career decisions.By having these conversations with our children, we can foster a better understanding of the real-world challenges of pursuing a chosen career. We can also help our children feel more connected to the process by having a shared understanding of the challenges and opportunities that lie ahead. This will help them develop self-confidence and inner peace as they navigate their career paths.

If we successful parents of linkedin, start spending only the dessert time with our kids there will be a generation of empowered kids. Problem is, while we are very happy to groom our subordinates at work and worry about our team's growth and satisfaction we are not paying any attention to the career journey of our children, their confusion and their satisfaction.
Most often the response I get to the difficult questions I pose to these successful parents is, "But we are sending him/her to the best tuition or we have put them into "Vishal Gagan Institute" for medical preparation ?" Only if all of us would have realised that tuitions might be solution to academic grades but definitely not to a rewarding and fulfilling career journey.

1 年Children who grow up to be high achievers have parents who do these things differently. When parents aren't consistent, children get confused !There isn't a set recipe curated by successful parents for raising successful children.

1 年I may not take this. Infact I feel most parents particularly the successful ones give sufficient opportunity to their children to speak out their mind, think independently and choose what they want to do. The younger generation I feel is much more balanced these days and these kids know exactly what they want to do. We should not underestimate their intelligence. Infact I think what is referred to as confusion is actually their awareness about everything.

1 年Perfectly put! I encounter such children day in and day out. It is alarming to see how oblivious these ‘successful’ parents of the reality that their guidance (read: aspiration) is narrowly steering their children’s paths not allowing them the space and freedom to discover their inner calling.
Abhishek Gupta this is exactly the problem that Trumsy is setting out to solve. Sachin Kapoor FYI
